[008] The Rock (Stargate: SG-1)
Theme Prompt: #008 – Schadenfreude
Title: The Rock
Fandom: Stargate: SG-1
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 777
Summary: Daniel can't understand why he can't find the rock, until Jack turns up and reveals why.
“Uh, Daniel?” Jack’s voice filtered through his distraction.
Daniel looked up from where he was sitting on the floor of his apartment. Boxes littered the edges of the room, their contents scattered all around him. Well, not scattered exactly. They might look disorganised from an outside perspective, but Daniel had them all categorised and sorted based on age, provenance, worth (either financial or sentimental) and current usefulness.
“Oh, hi, Jack,” he said.
He thought about trying to get up, but decided against it. He was fairly sure his hip joints had fused about two hours ago and he’d rather put off the pain of moving for as long as possible. He had quite a lot more stuff to sort through, after all.
Jack gestured vaguely, taking in the whole room in one sweep of his arm.
“Watcha doing?”
Daniel sighed, taking off his glasses and rubbing the concentration lines from his forehead.
“I’m trying to find that rock you brought back from P6S-3523.”
Jack’s eyebrows shot up.
“You know the one,” Daniel continued. “It was pinkish, about two inches across. You picked it up from a stream bed because you said it was pretty.”
“I know the one,” Jack said, “but-”
Daniel didn’t really register the response. “After the mission yesterday, I thought it would be useful to make a comparison between that rock and the mineral deposits Sam’s so excited about. There were distinct similarities so I thought we might be able to establish a geological connection between the two planets. That could have real anthropological and scientific significance. And, if nothing else, it could identify another source of the minerals if we find out they’re as useful as Sam thinks.”
Jack threw his hands up as if in surrender. “Daniel! Stop with the exposition already. I had the same thought. That’s why I’m here.” He delved in his jacket pocket and pulled a small object out. “I brought the rock to show you, to check I was right about the potential link.”
Daniel stared at him. “You had it all along?”
“Yep.” Jack had the grace to look a little sheepish. “I’m sorry I didn’t get here earlier. I could have saved you all this trouble. Um, how long exactly have you been rootling through all your stuff?”
Daniel’s shoulders slumped. “Since 6am. I woke up early, thinking about the rock and wondering where I might have filed it away. No wonder it wasn’t in any of the most obvious boxes.”
He shifted position with a view to extricating himself from the mess of piles, but found his left leg had gone to sleep. He yelped at the pain in his right hip and collapsed back to where he’d been before.
“Hang on,” Jack said. “Just stay there. I’ll come to you.”
Daniel watched with growing apprehension as Jack picked his way through the precious objects that littered the rug. But Jack made it to his side without stepping on anything and hauled Daniel to his feet. Daniel ended up leaning heavily on him as they made their way slowly to the couch.
“Wow, I think you’re getting too old to sit on the floor,” Jack said with a smirk, depositing Daniel onto the cushions. “I’m guessing I won’t be the only one complaining about my joints on missions before long.”
Daniel glared at him. “This is all your fault, you know.”
Jack spread his hands. “It seems like a case of great minds thinking alike to me. Mine’s still just quite a bit slower than yours. Plus, it’s my rock. So I don’t see why you thought it would be in your stuff. I take no responsibility for this situation whatsoever.” He looked down at Daniel’s pained grimace and his expression softened. “But I will selflessly offer to help you put all this stuff away. How about that for magnanimous?”
“If you’re going to be annoying about it, I’d rather just do it myself.”
“Okay, if that’s how you feel. I’ll head back to mine and enjoy a beer in the sunshine, out on my deck.” Jack spun on his heel and started towards the door.
Daniel considered the magnitude of the task and weighed it up against having to put up with Jack being smug for the rest of the day. As pins and needles swept down his entire left leg, the need for assistance won out.
“Wait! I’m sorry. Please stay and help me.”
Jack pirouetted back to face him, a wide grin on his face. He gave an elaborate bow.
“Of course, my good sir. I am at your service.”
Daniel sighed again. It was going to be a long afternoon.
