Summary: Vala's feeling guilty - always dangerous!
Vala hovered next to Daniel’s bed in the infirmary, poking at random instruments on a trolley and glancing repeatedly over at Daniel’s sleeping form. After a few minutes, she grew tired of waiting and sidled up to the bed, reaching out to poke Daniel’s arm. He gave a soft groan but otherwise didn’t response. Vala poked his arm again, harder this time.
“Mmmphf…?”
Blue eyes cracked open and looked up at her blearily.
“Oh good, you’re awake!” Vala beamed at him.
“Am I?” The words were slurred. “What happened?”
“There was a mishap on our latest mission and you, um, got a teensy bit injured.” Vala felt her smile growing fixed as she obfuscated desperately. “But don’t worry, you’re going to be absolutely fine! Back on your feet in no time!”
Daniel’s brow furrowed in adorable confusion. “Injured? How?”
“You, uh, fell down a hill. Very clumsy. You really should be more careful, you know.”
Daniel’s gaze hardened into a glare. “It’s starting to come back to me now. Didn’t you push me down the hill?”
Vala gave a bright laugh. “Oh, you remember that, do you? I was wondering if you would… Yes, um, yes, I did do that. Push you down the hill. Which is how you got injured. And I’m very, very sorry, okay? I swear I’ll make it up to you. In fact, I’m going to go and make it up to you right now! Bye!”
She fled the infirmary to the sound of Daniel’s protests that he’d really rather she didn’t try to do him any favours. But inspiration had struck and Vala headed straight to Daniel’s office, which was in a terrible mess, as always. Vala rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in. She started by collecting all the various books, artifacts, knick-knacks and doohickeys into piles of similar things. Or at least as far as she could identify what was similar. Then she found spaces in all the cabinets, drawers, storage boxes and desks to tidy everything away in a system that made perfect sense.
She got a bit distracted when she found a small hand mirror and had to spend a few minutes trying out new hairstyles but, in a couple of hours, she was finished. She stood in the middle of the room and surveyed her work. Every surface was clear and dusted, every loose item was neatly out of sight. Daniel was going to be so pleased.
There was a gasp from the doorway and Vala spun round to see Daniel leaning heavily on some crutches. She spread her arms wide, gave him a delighted smile and announced, “Ta-da!”
Daniel stared around his office, mouth open. At first, Vala thought he was stunned by how amazing a job she had performed. But his expression grew darker and darker until she was worried he might burst into flames.
“What have you done?” he demanded.
Vala’s smile faltered but she stood her ground. “I tidied up. Your office is always such a mess and I thought you might like some clear space to organise your thoughts. And while you’re on crutches, all that stuff scattered on the floor would have been a positive health hazard.”
Daniel struggled into the room and collapsed into the chair behind his desk, covering his face with his hands. “I knew where everything was,” he moaned. “It’s going to take me weeks to get everything organised properly again. What were you thinking? First you push me down a hill, and now this! What did I do to you to deserve such treatment?”
Vala pouted. “I’ll concede the thing with the hill. But with the office, I was only trying to help!”
Daniel dropped his hands in his lap and looked daggers at her. “Don’t try to help. Ever!”
“Well, if that’s the way you feel… Next time I push you down a hill, I won’t even apologise, let alone try and make up for it. Ungrateful!”
She flounced out, leaving Daniel to his crutches and his spotless office, off to find more trouble to cause.
