Summary: After Keith's departure in Season 4, Shiro wonders about his place on the team

Shiro sat in the control seat of the black lion. It felt like coming home to be sitting there again. But it also felt unfamiliar in a way he hadn’t anticipated. All the time he had been gone, Keith had been the Black Paladin and it was only when Keith had been away on the mission and Voltron was desperately needed that the black lion had accepted Shiro back as its pilot. A breach had taken place between them and Shiro still didn’t know why he had been rejected. He ran his hands over the controls.

“I wish you could tell me what’s going on,” he whispered to the empty air.

The barest hint of Keith’s scent remained in the air, but that was a welcome addition, not a distraction. Keith was the one who was gone now, off with his new friends, exploring his new-found heritage. Shiro shook his head. It wasn’t fair of him to blame Keith for wanting to know more about his background. It was just that they’d barely had any time together since his own return, and now they had been separated again.

And Shiro couldn’t help feeling as if the black lion had settled for him as an unwanted second choice. There wasn’t room for doubt as a Paladin of Voltron, though. He was back at the (literal) head of the team and he had a responsibility to lead with confidence.

As if summoned by his thoughts, an alarm sounded out in the castle and Coran’s voice came over the comms.

“We’ve got a distress signal coming from one of the newer allied planets. Reports of multiple Gulra fighters over the capital city. They need our help.”

Princess Allura spoke next. “If I open a wormhole, we can get the castle as close as possible and then head out as Voltron to defend them.”

Shiro replied, “Good thinking, Princess. As soon as it’s safe to leave your bridge station, head to the blue lion and join us outside. The rest of you, get to your lions now, so we’re ready to launch the second the castle emerges from the wormhole.”

“On my way,” came Lance’s voice.

“Me too,” chimed in Hunk. “There’s probably some defence we can offer while we wait for Allura.”

“My thinking exactly,” Shiro said. “Pidge, you in position?”

“Yup, ready!” she called out. “And it’s good to have you back at the helm, Shiro.”

The absolute faith in her tone warmed Shiro through and through. They all put their trust in him completely. He couldn’t let them down.

“Glad to be here,” he said, readying the black lion for launch. “Now, let’s clear those skies.”

Aww, Shiro. :( He wanted Keith to be the leader so badly but seeing Black take so long to welcome him back was sad. And I love how he misses Keith so much!
