Fred was singing again. The words broadcast over Big Hero 6’s radio network, the usual soundtrack to their group outings.

“Out on patrooooooool! The streets we controoooooool!
Hunting bad guys together! Big Hero 6 forever!”

He bounced in his three-eyed lizard suit and landed on the roof of a skyscraper as Baymax soared overhead, Hiro perched on his back.

“Any sign of trouble, Baymax?” Hiro asked.

“Scanning…” Even through his helmet, Hiro could detect the slight movement as Baymax cocked his head to one side. “I do not detect anything that requires further investigation.”

“That’s exactly the way I like it.” Wasabi’s voice came over Hiro’s headset from the car far below. He was driving, with Honey-Lemon in the passenger seat. Go-Go sped along the street alongside them on her souped-up roller blades.

“Awww, but that’s no fun,” Fred complained, leaping upwards again and letting out a stream of fire into the sky.

“Would you really rather innocent people were getting hurt, Freddie?” Honey-Lemon’s soft voice was reproachful.

“Well, noooo…” Fred admitted. “But we wouldn’t let that happen. We’d save the day, like the awesome superheroes we are!”

After another ten minutes of fruitless wandering, Wasabi called a halt and they all reconvened at the Lucky Cat Cafe. Aunt Cass welcomed them all with late-night pancakes, as usual presenting Fred with his own special plate, complete with maple syrup happy face. Fred’s face split into a wide grin and he dug in with relish. A couple of minutes later, Mochi the cat wandered past and Fred scooped him up into his arms for a snuggle.

“Who’s a good Mochi-Mochi?” he crooned. “You are! Yes, you are!”

Go-Go rolled her eyes at Honey-Lemon. “Do you think Fred is ever going to grow up?”

Fred looked up from where he was shoveling pancakes into his face again. “Why on earth would I want to do that?” Sticky crumbs sprayed from his lips as he spoke and Wasabi recoiled in horror.

Baymax lifted one arm, index finger raised. “Biologically, you have all finished growing up.” He paused for half a second. “Except Hiro.”

“Thanks for the reminder,” Hiro grumbled.

Baymax swivelled his head to look down at Hiro. “Had you forgotten that, while your intellect is significantly advanced for your age, you are biologically still a child? If that is the case, I have some concerns about your memory.”

“No, Baymax, I hadn’t forgotten,” Hiro said. “I’d just rather not have it pointed out, that’s all.”

“I will try to remember that in future.” Baymax then exacerbated the problem by patting Hiro on the head.

Honey-Lemon laid her hand on Hiro’s arm. “Don’t worry, Hiro.” She nodded to where Fred was now trying to extend his tongue far enough to lick maple syrup off his nose. “No matter how big the actual age gap, you’ll always be more mature than Freddie.”

Poor Hiro. Although, I think Fred has the better end of the deal. Adult, but still a child at heart.

Not me! I've never grown up.

This is so cute! I love Baymax missing the point of Hiro's annoyance, and Fred being...well, Fred. It's perfect.
