"Take that!"

The crack of bat hitting ball split the peaceful spring afternoon. Frowning, the girl at home plate adjusted her visor and wound up for another swing.

"I see...she's been like this for hours?" Minami covered her mouth with her hand. At her side, Nishimine Ayaka nodded.

"She won't listen if I interrupt her," she said; the girl at home plate, seeing her automatic pitching machine had run out of balls, ran to the outfield to retrieve some. "I know becoming a professional is her dream, but..."

Minami nodded. "It's extreme," she agreed. Spotting a stray ball at her feet, she picked it up.

"Here's another, Seira," she offered; the other girl grunted, grabbed the ball, and stalked off to the plate, knees bent almost in a march. Minami's face fell, watching her oldest friend's back. Seira's shoulderblades, hunched, seemed like a wall.

---

"She glared at you?!" Haruka's teacup rattled in her hands; Minami silently slid a napkin beneath them. "That's no good, Minami-san! That's not like Azuma-san at all! Something must be bothering her, but...." Haruka's nose scrunched up; her thick eyebrows drew together. "...I don't know her well enough to help..."

Minami stifled a laugh. "I'm happy just knowing I can confide in you," she reassured her friend. "Honestly...she's been distant since the new semester started. She isn't neglecting her Student Council duties, but she won't seek me out, either."

She set her own teacup aside and looked at the bulletin board above Haruka's desk. A photograph of five girls standing together had been newly-pinned alongside a photo strip of one of the girls making faces outside the Eiffel Tower. "Perhaps I'm lonely."

"Minami-san..." Haruka's lower lip trembled. She raised a hand, but a noise behind her made her slosh tea all over her napkin.

"Dorm mother, Shirogane." The elderly woman stood in the doorway, implacable as ever. "I was eighteen and foolish once."

"You...don't say." Minami turned to look at the dorm mother. Haruka fretted, then wiped the table.

Ms. Shirogane nodded. "It was graduation day. All of my friends were pursuing their futures, but I had chosen to remain at the school. Though I wished them all the best, seeing their receding backs was still difficult. I avoided them all day."

Minami listened attentively. Haruka crumpled her napkin in her fist. "But not forever, right?!" she asked. "Not staying in touch with your friends because leaving hurts - that's just too sad!"

Their dorm mother smiled. "They sought me out first. And none had guessed my feelings."

"A happy ending!" Haruka nodded, satisfied, but Minami put a hand to her chin. "Excuse me," she said, and stood to leave.

"Where are you going?" asked Haruka. Ms. Shirogane smiled.

When Seira shut her locker door, Minami was waiting with a stern expression on her face. "Talk to me," she said. "I apologize if something I've done has upset you, but I can't make amends without knowing the cause. And I don't want you to suffer frustration alone, either." She frowned. "Am I growing up into someone you don't want to be around...?"

"You could have told me sooner!" Seira opened her locker again just so she could slam it shut. "No sooner do I find out you're the one who's been saving everyone than the term is over and everyone's leaving! Amanogawa's in France, Akagi's who-knows-where..."

Minami knew where, but didn't correct her friend. "Then...you feel like I don't trust you...?"

"You idiot!" Seira pulled open her athletic bag and yanked out a sparkly tablecloth. "I was all set to throw a 'Thank You, Precure' party and then half your team left! Now it just won't be the same!!"

Minami's mouth dropped open. Seira turned away, fuming. "It's the only thing I can do to support you," she grumbled, but by that point Minami had started to laugh.

"Don't you mean you just like throwing parties?" she asked; Seira's turn came to double-take, but then she cracked a smile, too. "Maybe you are growing up to be a pain," she admitted, but when Minami held out an arm to carry her bag, Seira handed it over.

Minami followed her friend out of the locker room still giggling. She'd definitely have to find a way to fix this grievous wrong.
