Summary: Sara gets ambushed on a mission for the Time Bureau and runs into an old friend.

It’s rare that the Time Bureau would send them on a mission to 2019, given the complexities of it all (and the Legends penchant for screwing things up), but for this particular mission, Ava had requested Sara specifically. Given Sara’s history with the League of Assassins, she stood the best chance of understanding the gravity of this particular situation, and she did. Sneaking back into her old hidey holes and doing her best to milk her relationship with Anatoly Knyazev isn’t her idea of a good time, but she would do it for Ava and the chance to get at the anachronism that’s fallen just beyond their borders.

One of the things that Sara didn’t anticipate, however, is that Anatoly Knyazev is not the high ranking Bratva member she remembers. In fact, he’s lost all of his clout with the Bratva period – because of Oliver, of course it’s Oliver – and as a result, she had been very quickly outnumbered and overwhelmed. When she finally comes to, she’s zip tied to a chair and there’s someone present in the holding cell behind her.

“Don’t move too much,” the voice, the very familiar voice, says when she feels their binds shift. “We don’t exactly have a whole lot of real estate and this could get messy fast.”

It takes a moment for the voice to sink in, and she glances back over her shoulder, until she makes out the familiar curtain of red hair. “Natasha?”

“Sara?” The redhead also turns, so Sarah can see more of her face, and she can’t help the smirk that crosses her lips. “Part of me feels like this could be the start of a very bad joke.”

Sara can’t help the smirk that crosses her lips in return. “A former KGB spy and a former League of Assassins member walk into a bar …”

Natasha grins. “Something like that. The punch line is someone getting punched, it’s just not who you think.”

“Oh, I have a pretty good idea of who’s getting punched.” Sara shifts her wrists in their binds, feeling the way they’re wound in between Natasha’s, limiting their mobility and keeping them from using their usual spy tricks to break free. Can’t smash back and break the chair when there’s another person there, keeping you from having any leverage. “But we’d have to get out of these zip ties first.”

“There’s a nail file in my back pocket.” Sara hears the scrape of Natasha’s chair inching backwards against the floor, and the pads of her fingers brush against the denim of the other woman’s pants. “They must have missed it when they were patting us down.”

“Good catch,” Sara murmurs, running her fingers along the edges of the seams, trying to find where the curves of her body made actual lines for her to follow. She finds the top of her pants pocket before running her finger across until she felt the top of the metal file. “I’d apologize for feeling you up – if we weren’t on a clock, fighting for our lives this might be a very different conversation.”

“Never say never. We might have some time to kill.” Natasha’s flirting was very much not serious, but Sara appreciates the laugh all the same as she draws the file out between two fingers, before flipping it around to use on her own zip ties. “I’m just surprised you’re in the country, honestly. Last I spoke to Nyssa, she hadn’t heard from you in a while.”

“I’ve been on a very long term job,” Sara replies, adjusting until she finally gets into a good rhythm with the file. “Has me out of pocket a lot. On the other hand, I’m surprised to see you this close to Russia, given the former KGB of it all.”

“Yeah, well. Right now the U.S. isn’t being too friendly either.” Sara can picture the look on her friend’s face without needing to see it. “Did you hear about the Accords?”

“Yeah. Why do you think I’ve been out of pocket?” There’s a snap! as one of the zip ties give and Sara pushes back against her own binds. “Was that you or me?”

“Me.” Natasha’s arms are gone, and the file is taken from Sara’s fingers. The process after that is much faster, and soon Sara can feel circulation returning to her wrists. She brings them around to massage a bit of life back into them again, before glancing back to Natasha.

“What’s the play?”

“First we got out of the very heavy, very locked door.” The redhead’s eyes look up, roaming the edges of their cell to see if there are any other exits. “From what I heard, they’re coming back with the intent to question us, and part of me doesn’t want us to be there when we get here.”

“But if the door is the only way out, we don’t have much of a choice.” Sara considers, before gesturing for Natasha to come back. “Let’s do this the easy way, rather than the hard way.”

Natasha glances back curiously, before raising an eyebrow. “Lure them into a false sense of security and then kick their ass and steal the keys? My favorite.”

“There always was a reason we got along so well.” Heavy footfalls start coming up the hallway and Natasha darts back into place, winding her arms between Sara’s again. “When we get out of here we should have a drink, catch up.”

“I think that sounds like an excellent idea.” The door slams open and immediately the two of them both put their business faces on. Three burly men burst in, and Natasha flashes them a cocky smile. “Hey boys. You were just who we were looking for.”

“You’re going to bleed, Widow. A lot sooner than you think.”

“Maybe, but not as soon as you think.” Natasha glances back to Sara as the men move into place. “After you?”

“No. Together.”

It’s safe to say that the guards never saw them coming.
