[#039] Before it Ends Just Tell Me Where to Begin (Original)
Theme Prompt: #039 - Premonitions
Title: Before it Ends Just Tell Me Where to Begin
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 673
Summary: Cassandra tries to induct a new friend to her work.
Cassandra learns, over time, that there are ways around the curse that are still warnings, in and of themselves. It takes time to figure out all the specific loopholes that she can use to her advantage, but from what she can tell, she can still affect change. Cassandra can still make things better. She has to be very, very careful, with how she chooses to phrase it.
The first time Aaron Wilkinson walks into her shop, he learns this the hard way.
He’s a handsome young man, more than she would have expected from the rumors of the infamous paladin that had drifted north from his hometown of Miami. He’s young, but that, on the other hand, does not surprise her. They’re always young when they first begin. The world has a way of aging them very, very quickly.
“Ma’am,” he says as he makes his way in, adjusting his police officer’s uniform. “Bess McKintrick said you wanted to see me.”
“I did.” She sits down at her table, ornately decorated for her business as a palm-reading “psychic.” She gestures to the seat across from her. “Did she elaborate on why?”
“She said you had a job for me?”
“I do.” She pauses him again, studying his reaction. “Did she tell you what that would entail?”
“It would be a vague set of instructions, and you couldn’t tell me what it would mean, just that it’s important.”
“And how do you feel about that?”
He seems surprised, but he doesn’t balk. “Honestly? It’s kinda shitty. You’re expecting me just to have me trust you that you want me to do the right thing.”
“You’re smarter than most who find their way to me.”
“Not sure if that is a compliment or not.”
“It is. Might not be good for the work we have to do, but it is a compliment. Because I do need you to trust me, Aaron, and I will unfortunately only be able to give you so much.”
“Because if you give me more than that, it triggers your curse, and I don’t believe you anymore. I know. I’ve heard the stories.”
Cassandra can’t help but make a face at the stories because one man’s point of view shared them. The fall of Troy and everything that came before was written without her consult or approval, but at least that’s the one thing they managed to get right.
“So, I suppose we will just have to trust each other.” She pauses. “Would it help if I told you that if you do as I say, you won’t die?” This time, at least. She can’t promise it’ll be the same every time, but this particular situation happens to be relatively harmless.
He seems to sense the caveat, but he doesn’t draw attention to it. Instead, he nods. “So what do you need me to do?”
“Take the missing persons call at NYU. You won’t be on the right side of town, but it’s where you need to be.”
“That’s it? I have to take a call?” He crosses his arms in front of his chest. “You can’t tell me any more than that?”
She shakes her head. She could try and tell him that his future is at risk. She could try to convey that there’s a critical path he needs to walk, but she has a feeling he knows that already. He’s had the weight of the future sitting on his shoulders for some time now. He doesn’t realize, however, that it’s not the future he expects. That something much more significant is coming for him, whether he wants it to or not.
“Fine.” Aaron nods. “I’ll take the call.” He turns to walk away, and Cassandra stands.
“Oh, and Officer?”
He turns back to face her again, raising an eyebrow. In the face of skepticism, she smiles.
“I hope we can continue to work together in the future.”
He stares at her for a long moment before shaking his head and walking away. “Personally, ma’am – I hope we don’t.”
