[005] Corduroys and Spilled Nickels (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Theme Prompt: #005 - Minor Characters
Title: Corduroys and Spilled Nickels
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating/Warnings: None, P/G
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 606
Summary: Willow makes a late night purchase at the magic shop.
Rosie lowered the blinds and flipped over her sign to “closed.” What a perfect location she dreamily thought. Beautiful, southern California; a town called Sunnydale. Yes sir, when Rosie Donnelly found this place she was sure it was the place she wanted to settle. It maintained a small size, but seemed to incorporate everything one might need. The ocean was nearby, some woods, beautiful cliffs and of course desert; all in under an hour’s drive.
It was an odd town however. It had things you’d find in a much larger or much older town. Like churches and cemeteries; a lot of them. Her favorite thing in the whole town though was her very own shop. The magic shop! She couldn’t believe that a small town like this would have one.
She’d escaped her small town in Nebraska, where she was often ridiculed as a teenager for liking “all that witchy stuff.” But here, her passion was practicing her magic freely and helping others with their craft.
She was slightly concerned when she inquired about the previous owner. He’d apparently died a tragic death in the shop. But after some new paint and a good, old-fashioned cleansing, she’d opened her business.
Now it was six months later and she’d already gotten a steady clientele. Another oddity about this small town was that there seemed to be high traffic in supplies for the occult. She didn’t pay too much attention to it though, since it paid the bills.
A frantic knocking at the door snapped her out of her day dream. It was already dark out and the store was clearly closed. Rosie stepped over to the door and opened it as far as the chain would allow.
“Hi!” Willow said. “I’m really sorry but it’s an emergency! Can I come in?” Rosie smiled, narrowed the door, took off the chain, and opened up to let Willow in.
Willow was pretty much Rosie’s number one customer. She never really opened up about what spells she was doing, but based on the items purchased, it was big league stuff.
“Thanks!” Willow breathed. Clearly she’d run to try and make it before closing. “I need twice blessed sand and angelica root.”
“Not a problem,” Rosie answered. “The root is in a jar on that shelf there and the sand is behind the counter. I’ll get some for you.” Willow was clearly still in a hurry because she was already half way to the shelf before Rosie finished speaking. “Doing a spell for living flame?” Rosie asked.
“Uh ... huh.” Willow said distractedly. Rosie decided not to press the issue, but began ringing through Willow’s purchase. She’d gotten to know Willow pretty well. At first, Rosie had assumed that she was any other girl who came in, looking for scented candles, dream catchers or a rabbits’ foot. But she quickly learned that Willow was well into true magic and spells.
Willow arrived at the till with her angelica root and began rummaging in her corduroys for her money. “That’ll be $8.80,” Rosie said. Willow counted out her money, spilling a few nickels on the floor. She then grabbed the bag and started for the door.
“Thanks!” She said over her shoulder.
“You’re welcome...,” Rosie started but Willow was already gone.
She shook off her nervous feeling and began sweeping the floors. A quick sweep through and then she could close up for the night.
Rosie stopped suddenly. Duh, she forgot to lock the door. She set down her broom and stepped over to the doorway. She locked the deadbolt and slid on the chain. Don’t want anyone uninvited getting in, she thought.
