Title: Meet the Boss

Word Count: 999 (yes, really :p)
Summary: The rogue magicians chosen to save the world by the angel Miss Rosacelsia meet the man who hired them.
Note: Part of a longer story I'm working on.

When Miss Rosacelsia told them whom they had been working for all along, Farren kicked a tree stump to pieces and Vertag had to grip his arm very tightly to make him stop letting out small bursts of magic.

‘You tricked us?’ Valerie said in her cold, calm way.

‘Did I?’ Miss Rosacelsia said. She was still smiling, but her expression was glassy and doll-like. ‘When I first gathered you together, I said you wouldn’t know the name of your employer until the time was right. I have never deceived you about his identity. If anything, I have always implied it, and you should have been able to understand by yourselves.’

Their eyes roamed over her figure and each searched their minds for memories of their time travelling so far that might have carried hints about Miss Rosacelsia’s true master. It was clear that they all had as little idea about what she meant as Vertag did.

‘I thought one of the things that brought us together was that we all hated Gareth Sieghart,’ Elsa-Maria said with a strange sort of smile. ‘But as it turns out, we’ve been working for him all along.’

‘So you’re going to take us to meet him now?’ Vertag said.

‘Tomorrow. I’ll take you to one of his guest houses to rest tonight, where you will be well-taken care of. For once.’ Miss Rosacelsia smiled.

Farren snorted, but Elsa-Maria said, ‘Oh, a bed! Finally!’ and Valerie shrugged.

They had to share a suite, but it was a large suite. Elsa-Maria was happy, so Valerie was happy. Farren paced up and down, pretending to be ill at ease indoors, but he spent a whole hour in the bath, and Vertag knew he was actually relieved to be in comfort too.

As usual, Cecilia flitted around from person to person, asking them if they felt well or had any ills they wanted her to tend to. As usual, they all brushed her off in their own way, but she insisted on seeing Vertag’s injured shoulder, so he acquiesced.

‘How do you feel about meeting Sieghart?’ he asked when she had placed her hands on his shoulder and he could feel the magic moving through her and into the scarred muscle.

‘I will be very glad to meet him,’ she answered in her soft voice. ‘I hope he is doing well.’

‘You like the Sieghart family then?’ he said with some surprise. Of course, Cecilia always said very little, and she was nothing more than the healer of the company, but he thought there had to be some reason she was part of their little group.

‘Everything I know about them makes me esteem them.’

‘Even that Elsa-Maria’s brother died due to their negligence? That my status as a mixed breed was discovered by the government and my parents have had to live in hiding ever since?’ he shot at her. ‘All of us and countless others have suffered at the Siegharts’ hands.’

‘I believe they have always had good intentions at heart. That there are ill consequences of their actions, particularly because they are a mafia family who cannot act openly, they cannot always help.’

Vertag was even more taken aback by her answer. Cecilia had always seemed like such a meek little thing to him, and he thought that his words would have made her fall silent.

‘That is your objective opinion? Perhaps you would change your mind if you saw more of the destruction they wrought in the world.’

‘Gareth Sieghart has hired all of you to save the world,’ she said with a smile. ‘Is that not enough? Perhaps you will change your mind when you meet him.’

And she moved away before he could reply.

-

After all the formality of staying in a guest house, Vertag half-expected Miss Rosacelsia to demand they wear formalwear. Fortunately, she attempted no such thing, but he was surprised to catch a whiff of scent off of Cecilia.

‘Do you think Cecilia is a fan of Gareth Sieghart?’ Elsa-Maria whispered to him. ‘I can feel her anticipating meeting him.’

‘Then she’s even more of a soft little fool than I thought she was,’ he said.

A car brought them to the Sieghart Manor. After they were ushered by some sort of butler into a drawing room, Farren came to stand close beside Vertag, and Elsa-Maria, feeling the tension, took Valerie’s hand. Cecilia and Miss Rosacelsia stood in the middle of the room.

‘Signor Sieghart,’ a servant announced, and the man himself came into the room.

He was a tall man, in a well-cut suit made to make him appear taller, with dirty-blonde hair and a clean-shaven face. His eyes were icy blue and held a sharp expression – but only for a moment. He stepped forward and, ignoring the others in the room for the time being, took Miss Rosacelsia’s hand.

‘Welcome home, Miss Rosacelsia,’ he said.

‘Thank you, lovely,’ she said affectionately, squeezing his hand. ‘I’m glad to be back. How are you, dearie?’

‘Oh, you know. I am well enough.’ He let go of her and turned to Cecilia. ‘I could be better.’

Cecilia smiled in a full, bright way she had never smiled before while she had been journeying with Vertag and the others. She looked almost a different person.

‘Do you require my services as a healer, Signor?’ she said teasingly.

‘I would much rather have your services as my wife,’ Sieghart said, and everything clicked together in Vertag’s mind.

Cecilia laughed and threw her arms around him, kissing his face lovingly. ‘How dare you say that in front of our guests!’

‘Pardon me. I’ve missed you, Cece,’ Sieghart said just as warmly.

Glancing around, Vertag saw that everyone else was just as surprised as he was. Farren was frowning, and Elsa-Maria and Valerie communicated with silent stares. He wondered, too, if they were thinking the same thing as him.

If I’d realised why she was with us from the beginning -
