[#046] And You’ll Have to Stay, til You Somehow Find a Way (Original)

Theme Prompt: #046 - Horizons
Title: And You’ll Have to Stay, til You Somehow Find a Way
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 600
Summary: Deirdre and Cassandra prepare to venture to a new world.

Shipyard noise clamors around them as Deirdre leads Cassandra to the ship that rises out of port ahead of them. The white sails glimmer in the sunlight, and Deirdre thinks that it glows like freedom. For so long, she’s run throughout this continent, trying to avoid the man she faked her death to escape, but here seems to be the answer she’s sought for centuries.

He can’t chase her if she’s in another brand-new land.

“Are you sure you want to come with me?”

The single trunk they managed to pack most of their essential items into hangs between them, making it difficult to get anywhere quickly. It bangs back against Cassandra’s knees again, causing her to stumble, and the other woman winces.

“Why don’t you worry less about my feelings and go bat your eyelashes at one of those deckhands to get them to help us with our trunk.”

Deirdre gives her a sympathetic look and momentarily forgives her for dodging the question. “Here. Let’s set it down over here, and I’ll go find some help.”

Once they find a quiet place to set the trunk down, Deirdre wanders off to work her magic. She finds the sturdiest, prettiest deckhand she can find and entices him back to help them with their luggage. Smiling at both of them as he – William – glances between the two of them curiously.

“My ladies, you should not travel alone. Is there not a man to help you?”

“Oh, sweet William,” Deirdre shakes her head. “We find that we manage much better without men.”

“I cannot see how that is, but should you need assistance, I would be happy to come to your defense.”

“And how much will that defense cost us?” Cassandra murmurs. William blinks at her in confusion, but Deirdre shakes her head and draws his attention back to her.

“You will have our gratitude for any help you’re willing to give, of course.” She can feel Cassandra rolling her eyes behind her back, but Deirdre ignores it, merely picking up her skirts and sweeping off to the ship. “Coming, Cassie?”

“Of course.”

A few hours later, with a stomach full of gamy meat, Deirdre sweeps her way back up to the deck of the ship to stare out at the expanse ahead of her. She hasn’t seen Cassandra since they settled in their cabin, and she doesn’t want to lose track of her friend. As much as she knows that the other woman can defend herself, that doesn’t mean she wants to lose her in the shuffle.

She spots the other woman at the bow, staring out over the water, and she makes her way over, placing her hand on Cassandra’s shoulder gently. “Enjoying the view?”

“The last time I was on a ship like this, Menelaus was stealing me from Troy.” Cassandra smiles softly, keeping her eyes on the setting sun ahead of them. “This time, it feels like freedom.”

Deirdre smiles as well, before leaning into her friend’s side. “I know what you mean.”

“How much ‘gratitude’ have you given your deckhand friend?”

Deirdre snorts. “Not much. Yet, anyway. You can’t deny that he’s very handsome.”

Cassandra rolls her eyes again. “So you say.”

Deirdre shakes her head before changing the subject. “Are you sure about this? Leaving Europe?”

The other woman nods, before squeezing Deirdre’s hand. “Our stories are past the horizon. This ship is where we should be.”

Deirdre nods again, before leaning and resting her head against her friend’s shoulder. “Then I can’t wait to see what they have in store.”

Interesting twist of the legend! I love stories that are based in mythology and yours is no expectation!

Oooh, I recognized those names but didn't realize it was mythology-based! This is lovely. I would read an entire saga about their adventures beyond that horizon.

They sound like two very capable ladies indeed - except for carting around luggage. It sounds like they'll have lots of adventures.
