[#047] And Left a Part of You Behind (Teen Wolf)

Theme Prompt: #047 - Rebuilding
Title: And Left a Part of You Behind
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 600
Summary: Melissa and Chris regroup after a long night dealing with the supernatural.

Melissa’s worked a lot of overnight shifts in her time, but she can’t remember the last time she’s felt so tired. She feels like she’s been running on adrenaline for weeks. She knows it makes no sense – that it was the fear talking, the creature messing with their minds – but she’s still basking in the relief, moving to rest a hand against the counter as she waits for the unsteadiness to subside.

“You alright?”

Chris’s voice, impossibly steady, comes from over her shoulder as his hand finds his way to the small of her back. She’s not sure how he can be so calm after everything, but Chris Argent has always been hard to read, even on a good day. Instead of questioning it too much, she decides to lean into his support instead, before nodding.

“Just a little shaky. Turns out, if you stop making everyone terrified, the adrenaline drop is a bit of a doozy.” She looks over at him. “Are you?”

He nods. It doesn’t surprise Melissa – Chris always says he’s okay. For now, she’s willing to let it be if it means they can get out of here. Scott is fine; the rest of the pack is good; they have their celebrations to make. Melissa is in search of something quieter. She looks up at the man next to her and smiles.

“Want to get something to eat?”

He glances over, amusement in his eyes, before nodding and starting to guide them to the door. “Sure. I could eat. Might be a little late for dinner, though.”

As they round the corner to the front door, the first streaks of sunlight peek out from behind the trees and houses in the distance, and Melissa smiles. “That’s okay. I was feeling like breakfast, anyway.”

An hour later, Melissa’s starting to feel a little more human again. She swallows the last of her tangy orange juice before resting her chin in her hand.

“So. What next?”

Chris watches her from across the table, his thumb brushing against the edge of his coffee cup. “Haven’t decided yet.”

“Thinking about hitting the road again?”

“Maybe. Scott seems to be doing well enough on his own. He doesn’t need me around so much.”

Melissa nods. She doesn’t want to go back to dancing around things with him again, but she knows that this isn’t easy for him either. Beacon Hills has cost him so much. She knows why he might not want to stay. But she wants him to stay.

“Scott, maybe not. But other people might like it if you stuck around.”

A small smile curls at the corner of his mouth, and he leans in to meet her. “That so?”

She smiles in return, before nodding. “It is. In fact, I think I’ve told you many times that you don’t have to go.”

“You have. Sounds like I should listen to you.”

She takes a deep breath before shrugging. She doesn’t want Chris to feel like he has to stay if he doesn’t want to – doesn’t want her to be more specific. But she also isn’t afraid to shove him out of his own way if he needs it.

“I have been known to be pretty smart.” She smiles. “And I think you should at least get a good eight hours of sleep before you make any serious decisions.”

Chris laughs. “Well, I wouldn’t want to go against medical advice.”

“Good.” She squeezes his hand. “So. Home, then?”

He nods, before preparing to get up with her. “I think that’s a great idea.”

This sounds like the beginning of something for both of them.
