[#006] Bridges Burned (Lucifer)
Theme Prompt: Vainglory
Title: Bridges Burned
Fandom: Lucifer
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 537
Summary: Takes place after this week’s episode - Lucifer has burned his bridges, literally.
Chloe stepped into the club and was instantly enveloped by noise and flashing lights. Even by Lux’s usual standards, the atmosphere tonight was electric. She wondered, not for the first time, what she was doing there.
As if summoned by her thoughts, the reason for her presence stepped into a spotlight at the top of a flight of stairs. Lucifer was wearing his usual uniform of tuxedo, shirt artfully open at the neck, and smile of pure arrogance and self-assurance firmly on his face. The crowd below looked up as one and a cheer rose up from the dance floor. Lucifer bowed low with mock humility, then practically skipped down the stairs to general applause. He bounded over to where Chloe stood hesitantly near the entrance.
“Detective!” he exclaimed, actually looking genuinely pleased to see her. “You came!”
His boyish enthusiasm was difficult to resist, as ever, and Chloe rolled her eyes, though she felt a smile stretching her lips at the same time.
Lucifer took her left hand in his, snaking his right arm around her waist and leading her towards the bar. The physical contact was unexpected, but she didn’t pull away. There was something about him tonight, something even more than his usual charm.
“I’m celebrating!” he told her, his eyes sparkling perhaps a little too much. “I’ve finally burned my bridges, and I have you to thank for helping me do it.”
“Me?” Chloe said, surprised. “What did I do?”
“You reminded me that the ties that bind me to where I came from can only limit the greatness I can achieve, here amongst you mortals.” He released her, spreading his arms expansively to encompass the entire club. “This is where I belong, and this is the only home I need. The awesomeness of me can never be appreciated by my father or my brothers - they can only hold me back. Here is where my genius can be truly acknowledged, and where I will obtain the adulation I really deserve!” He snapped his fingers. “Maze! Shots all round!”
The people at the bar cheered again, and Lucifer’s long-suffering but strangely protective bartender stalked over to do his bidding.
Chloe considered Lucifer’s words and wondered what it was he’d done to ‘burn his bridges’. She knew there was a lot about his background she still didn’t know, and that his relationship with his father was tumultuous at best. She remembered the scars on his back, and though perhaps that cutting ties with his family might actually be good for him. He seemed in a particularly playful mood tonight, but there was a depth of pain in his eyes that he could never quite hide, no matter how much he tried. Chloe caught Maze’s eye and mutual concern for this enigmatic man passed between them.
Lucifer placed a brimming shot glass down in front of her, then grinned at her expectantly.
Alarm bells went off in Chloe’s head and she rolled her eyes again, but then picked up the glass and downed the alcohol in one go. If she turned up at Dan’s place to pick up Trixie the following morning with a monster hang-over, she could always say the Devil made her do it.
