Title: It’s Never Been This Hot, and I’ve Never Been So Bored

Summary: Kira and her brother plan an unlikely caper.
The humidity is oppressive by the time they reach the Citadel. Kira, already bored with the adventure at hand, reaches one hand out for the wall and starts to haul herself upwards on the slightly uneven pieces of brickwork.
“Gimme a boost?”
“Not sure if this is a good idea,” Asheron sighs, glancing back to his ascending sister. Kira’s foot slips on one of the rocks just above his head, and his hands come up to catch it, giving her leverage to keep pushing upwards. Her foot squirms against his grip, trying to gain purchase, but she doesn’t fight him, using the force to push herself up and onto the edge of the wall. Elegantly, one leg swings up into a crouch so that she’s peering at her brother over the edge.
“So, does that mean you’re not coming?”
“I didn’t say that. I just said I didn’t think this was a good idea.” Asheron raises his eyebrows curiously. “Is this job even worth the reimbursement?”
“Hold that thought.”
The world goes silent as she folds herself backward, backflipping smoothly over the edge of the wall and to the ground on the other side. After a brief pause for stealth – they had picked this side of the Citadel for a reason, but just in case – she makes her way over to the hidden door and flips the lock, pulling the door open. She gestures in front of her in one smooth gesture, as though to say after you.
“You were saying?”
“This seems like too much trouble for too little money, Kira.”
“And how much money do we have exactly, at this very moment, Asheron?”
Asheron makes a face, before glancing off to the rest of the city to make sure no one saw them enter. “Okay, what is your plan exactly?”
“Find fancy clothes, sneak into the fancy party, steal the giant diamond, sneak back out again.”
“That’s your plan?”
“Do we need a more complicated plan than that? You know they always go to shit anyway.”
“I’d like to know you’ve at least seen the place we’re supposed to be sneaking into rather than just going in blind.”
Kira rolls her eyes before adjusting her cloak. “Relax, Ash. I’ve got this.”
“That’s what you say every time.” Asheron frowns as he follows after her into the city at large. “I’d like to not end up in jail this time.”
“Deal,” Kira nods as they disappear into the crowds. “No jail.”

Getting into the party isn’t a problem. It turns out, getting out is where they run into issues.
Kira gets the diamond in record time, smuggling it into the folds of her massive party dress, but what she hadn’t realized is that the diamond was the closing attraction at the end of the party, and she hasn’t recovered her brother to make their grand escape yet. Trying to keep as calm and poised as possible, she starts to make her way through the crowded room, weaving in and out of people proceeding to see the diamond’s grand reveal.
Eventually, she finds her brother chatting with one of the courtiers, and she takes his arm, pulling him away from the charming blond. He sputters out a goodbye to her, before turning to his sister.
“Why are we going the other way?”
Kira is about to respond, when a shout comes from the other room: “The Diamond! It’s been stolen!”
“That’s why we’re going the other way,” she sighs, before steering him around towards the hallways leading to the exit.
He groans. “You got caught already.”
“I didn’t realize it was going to be actively displayed!”
“And why didn’t you realize that? He paid an absurd amount of money for that diamond, of course, he was going to show it off!”
“Are you here to critique my planning process, or are you going to help me get out of here?”
“Can’t I do both.” His dry tone does not earn him any goodwill with his sister, but his eyes are already scanning the room around him, looking for an exit. “First, we need to get you out of this dress. Then we need to get out of here. Do you have an exit, at least?”
He grabs the door to an empty bedroom, shoving them both inside, before helping his sister strip out of her fancy layers. He throws a pair of pants at her from the closets. She yanks that and a shirt on before flashing him a smile.
“I do. But you’re probably not going to like it.”
Asheron rolls his eyes as he turns to follow her, shaking his head as he goes. “Gods help me if we survive this, I’m planning the next job.”
Kira laughs as she makes her way to the window. “Whatever you say, big brother. Ready to build a rope out of these bedsheets?”
He sighs exasperated. “Do I have any other choice?”
“You could go back in there, get caught by the guards, and likely get thrown in prison?”
“Right. Bedsheets it is.”
