[#063] I'd Rather be Dry but at Least I'm Alive (Original)

Theme Prompt: #063 - Priceless
Title: I’d Rather Be Dry But at Least I’m Alive
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 884
Summary: Allegra tries to wrangle her way through the local markets.

“I’ll give you ten for it.”

“Ten?” Allegra glances down at the silk scarves in her hand, trying to weigh the pros and cons in her mind. That doesn’t seem like an appropriate price for products of this quality, especially given that she knows how much her family spent on them, so clearly, the merchant must have misquoted. “Ten each, you mean?”

“No, ten for the lot of them.”

Allegra huffs. “These are Aspiran silks. People pay ten times that.”

“Yeah, and in these parts, I’ll probably wind up moving them for less.” The merchant eyes her carefully. “The people around here don’t have that kind of coin, love. If you wanted more for them, you should have sold them in the citadel you came from.”

Allegra looks down at the silks again, running her fingers over them, before shaking her head as she starts to walk away. “No. I know their value. I won’t sell for less than that.”

“Then I hope you don’t mind starving then.”

The words draw the redhead to a stop. She was running low on money, and she knew she was going to have to cave sooner or later. She fingered the silks again, trying to weigh the pros and cons, before turning on her heel and making her way back to the vendor.

“Ten for each. Please, it’s a fair price.”

“Five for each. Final offer.”

Allegra’s head drops before she nods and hands over the silks to the merchant. The merchant counts them out, before passing over a pouch with the cash in it. Allegra takes it from her, opening it to count to make sure it was all there when the merchant reaches out to catch her wrist.

“What are you doing?” Allegra asks, starting to jerk away, only for the merchant to tighten her grip. The other hand follows, adjusting her wrist so that she can get a better look at her bracelet. The most beautiful piece Allegra owns, by far, with blue sapphires set into a golden band. It had been a gift from her father, and she had no intention of selling it.

“I’ll give you a hundred for it.”

“What?” The idea of having that much money is baffling, and she glances down at the bracelet in concern. “No, it’s not for sale.”

“Oh, don’t pretend like you don’t need the money.”

“It’s not about the money.”

“Everything’s got a price, dearie. Just tell me what it is.”

“No, this doesn’t.” Allegra jerks her wrist back.

She slips free, and the momentum takes her backward until she hits a firm surface behind her. Her eyebrow raises in surprise, and she turns to look up and see a tall man, broad as a house, with long dark hair that hung loosely around his shoulders. Standing next to him is a woman more around Allegra’s height, with equally dark hair and a kind smile.

“What are you up to now, Athena?” The woman raises an eyebrow at the merchant, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

“Just trying to make a deal, Tristan, that’s all. Keep your nose out of it.”

“Sounded to me like you two already made your deal, and you were trying to get something she didn’t want to give you.”

“We were getting around to it.” The merchant looks over at Allegra. “Weren’t we, love?”

Tristan turns and looks at Allegra. The man with her does the same. Allegra doesn’t know what to do, but she takes the support where offered, and shakes her head. “The bracelet isn’t for sale.”

“That’s what I thought.” Tristan glances at the bag in her hand. “Did she pay you fairly for what you did sell?”

Allegra glances down at the bag again, thumbing through the coins before nodding. “Yes, she did.”

“Good. Then it sounds like you’re done. Transaction concluded.” Tristan wraps an arm around Allegra’s shoulders, turning and steering her away from the stand and back towards the crowded city square. Once they’re out of earshot, the other woman smiles. “Sorry about her. She tends to get a little over-eager. Hope you don’t mind the assist.”

“No, not at all. Thank you.” Allegra tucks away her money as they walk, before glancing up at both of them with a smile. “You didn’t have to do that.”

“Of course, we did.” Tristan places a hand to her chest. “I’m Tristan. This is my husband, Carver.”

“Allegra. Do you live here in town?”

“We have a farm just outside it. Are you thinking of moving to our little hamlet?”

Allegra shrugs. “Perhaps. I’m trying to find … somewhere new.”

“Well. Why don’t you come and have dinner at our house? I’m sure the kids will be grateful for the distraction. We can help you find somewhere to stay.”

Allegra glances between them. “You don’t have to. I wouldn’t want to impose.”

“It’s not an imposition if we’re inviting you,” Carver points out, the corner of his mouth turned up in a small smile. “Come to our place, relax and have a good meal. Everything will be better tomorrow.”

Allegra nods with a small smile, and for the first time in days, her shoulders feel a bit lighter. “Alright. Just one night.”

Maybe they’re right, and things will be better in the morning.

Nice. It felt like a really strong glimpse into a world that you've built, where I want to know not just what will happen next, but also the background.

I really hope Allegra's new friends are as honest and kind as they seem to be. She really needs some good luck right now.

I'm glad she didn't have to give up anything truly valuable. It sounds as though her luck might have turned a corner though.

I really like the visuals in this—the descriptions of the items she possessed and of the people who came to the rescue came across very vividly and it was so easy to picture.
