[#065] Distantly In Love (FAKE)

Theme Prompt: #065 – Long Distance
Title: Distantly In Love
Fandom: FAKE
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 1000
Summary: Dee and Ryo are currently working on opposite sides of the world. It’s tough on them both, but they’re coping by skyping every day.

Dee scowled at the computer screen; getting to talk to his lover face-to-face every day was better than not seeing him at all, but it was a forceful reminder of how much distance there was between them. It was broad daylight in California but nighttime where Ryo was.

“Whose dumbass idea was this again? ‘Cause I want it on record that I hate it!”

They’d been lovers for just over six months, since that day in New Orleans when they’d kissed for the first time in the pouring rain, and now Ryo was half the world away, filming in England of all places. Dee ached for his partner in ways he’d never imagined, yearning for his touch, and they’d only been apart for three weeks. How he was going to get through the next two months he had no idea.

Ryo snickered. “You’re the one said I should take this gig. You said it would be good for my career, and you were right. I’m working with some really great people and I’m pretty sure the show’s gonna be a big hit. The TV critics over here have nothing but good things to say about the pilot episode.”

“I must’ve been out of my mind ‘cause I’m stuck here in L.A. and you’re like a million miles away!”

“It’s not that far, only about five and a half thousand.” Ryo frowned slightly. “I’m not sure there’s anywhere on earth that’s a million miles away from L.A. I’ll have to look that up later, otherwise I’ll be thinking about it all night and I won’t get any sleep. Thanks for that.”

“You spend your nights thinkin’ about geography?” That was quite a blow to Dee’s self esteem, especially since he spent every second of the day when he wasn’t actively involved in the movie he was working on thinking about his lover and how much he missed him.

“Not usually, but you know how my brain works.”

That wasn’t strictly true; Ryo’s brain frequently baffled Dee. His partner was a highly intelligent man, with a great many interests, and yet there were days he’d lose his head if it wasn’t screwed on, and he was completely oblivious to anyone hitting on him. Sometimes Dee couldn’t help wondering why someone as smart as Ryo Maclean would choose to become a professional stuntman. He could have done pretty much anything with his life.

“You just like to know stuff.”

“Mostly useless facts.” Ryo gave a wry grin. “Anything useful, like where I put my keys, just gets lost in the clutter.”

Dee chuckled, remembering the day Ryo had practically upended the furniture in their apartment, searching for the keys he’d left in the door lock.

“How’re ya doin’ with that now I’m not there to help ya find things?”

“Terrible. Yesterday I spent almost an hour searching the trailer, looking for my jacket before I finally remembered I’d left it at the hotel because it was warm out.”

“Airhead,” Dee teased. “You need a keeper.”

“I’ve got one.”

“You do?” It was Dee’s turn to frown at the screen.

“Yeah. Unfortunately he happens to be filming a movie in L.A. at the moment.”

Dee relaxed. “You mean me.”

“Of course; who else would I be talking about?”

“How should I know? Thought maybe you’d met some British cutie…” Dee trailed off, feeling oddly vulnerable.

“Now you’re being silly. I love you; I’m not interested in anyone else. I’m here to work, that’s all.”

“I know, I just miss you is all. Can’t help thinkin’ about you livin’ it up in London without me.”

“I miss you too, Dee, but I’m hardly living it up. Pinewood’s a lot smaller than the studios in L.A., conditions are a bit cramped, my flat is the size of a shoebox, and there’s been no time for any sightseeing. Everyone’s working hard to make the show the hit it deserves to be, so we’re putting in long hours. The stunt team and most of the crew are helping out in other areas; props, sets, wardrobe, you name it I’ve done it. That’s how we’re managing to keep within budget. It’s unorthodox and there were some union issues early on, but the producer got it sorted.”

“Sounds like fun times. You’re gettin’ paid for this gig, right?”

Ryo laughed. “Yes, and all the safety equipment’s in place for the stunts, there’s no cutting corners. The production budget’s being used efficiently, that’s all. You don’t have to worry.”

“Still gonna; can’t help it with you so far away.”

“Another eight weeks and I’ll be home; the time will fly.”

“Yeah, I guess,” Dee agreed, although he didn’t believe it, not if the last three weeks were anything to go by.

“How’re things on the movie?”

“Location shootin’ starts Monday; I get to do the action hero stuff on a collapsin’ rope bridge over a ragin’ torrent. ‘Course, this time of year the river’s barely a trickle so special effects’ll have to edit the flood waters in later, but the stunt’s gonna be awesome anyway.”

“Wish I could be there to see it. I’ve got wirework tomorrow so I’ll be spending most of the day flying through the air.”

“Damn, now I’m envious!”

“Don’t be; you know how those harnesses chafe.”

Dee winced. “Okay, yeah, but still… Flyin’!”

“I know.” Ryo grinned, dark eyes sparkling, and dammit, Dee missed that, missed sharing the excitement and fun of their profession, missed working with his lover.

“Maybe when this movie wraps I’ll come over, spend some time with ya.”

“That would be good.”

“Whelp, gotta go, babe. Work to do. Love ya!”

“Love you too, Dee. Talk to you tomorrow?”

“Count on it. Be careful flyin’ around, ‘kay?”

“Always.”

Dee took a quick screenshot of his lover’s face before their connection was terminated and sat looking at it. Long-distance relationships were tough but it wouldn’t be forever; they’d get through this. Being apart for a couple of months would only make them stronger.

The End

Hopefully work will keep Dee's mind off things for a little while at least.
