[#066] THUNDERCLAPS (WONDER WOMAN)
Theme Prompt: #66—Gathering Clouds.
Title: Thunderclaps.
Fandom: Wonder Woman (DCEU).
Rating/Warnings: G. Does take inspiration from Wonder Woman 1984 but there's no spoilers in here. (It belongs in one of my fic's universes, but can be read as a standalone.)
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 850.
Summary: Steve, Diana and Zeus have a little chat.
Thunderclaps as she descends from the dark grey skies. The clouds are ferociously angry as they cluster to witness her dive back down to the earth.
Diana lands gracefully in front of him, boots cratering the ground as she stands to her full height. The asphalt cracks and spans roots digging deep beneath the earth to Hades. The sky above them is still dark and grey, and Steve can't help but feel fear climb the steps of his spine.
Her smile is beautiful, though. The clouds don't part for it, but it lights up the darker city streets as if she'd carried the sun from the skies just for him. That fear that had been creeping from the small of his back leaps off and sinks into the cracks of the streets, leaving him feeling weightless.
"So, uh... How did it go?" His hands feel useless in front of him so he slips them into the pockets of his jeans.
Her tiara glows beneath the stormy grey skies as thunder hums above them. "Good," she says, letting out a breath. Her chest heaves and her armour moves with the exhale as if it's merely made of fabric. It must be heavy, he thinks, and then he wonders why he's thinking of that when he knows he can't lift even her boot.
"Is he, you know... Mad?"
Her brows lift and she shakes her head. "No," she says.
"Are you sure?" He gazes up at the dark sky that hides any hint of sun from slipping down to warm them.
He's only ever met Zeus once, and he can't say the impression Diana's father left on him was an impressive one. He's an intimidating man, very tall and thick-shouldered. He can't remember what he looked like other than having a sharply cut smile and eyes that struck him down like lightning itself.
Diana smiles and reaches out to touch his bicep. Her fingers are warm like the sun. "I am very sure," she says with amusement.
"Why are you laughing at me?" He doesn't move his arm in fear of shrugging her off. Her fingers feel smooth and calloused at the same time. "It's not funny! Your father is very scary, Diana."
She chuckles. "It's fine, Steve." He feels all the tension begin to slip from his body like her fingertips are leeching it from him. She places her other hand on his short-sleeve shirt where it's torn. "He isn't mad at you."
"He's making me think he is."
She shakes her head and smiles. With an upbeat tone, she teases, "Why would he be mad? It isn't as if you flew a plane into the waters of Themyscira which led to the discovery of the Amazons and then led me out of the safe shores of my home to the world of man. Then, I had to travel to Hades and complete various tasks to simply see you again, and finally barter with his wife to have you all to myself in the mortal realm."
Her smile makes the retelling hit far less sharply. Still, he narrows his eyes. "When you put it like that, it makes me like I'm the bad guy."
Her fingers slide down his arm to brush against his wrist. It's then he sees his watch—still intact, still wrapped around her wrist like it's one of her indestructible bracelets. The hand inside of the glass ticks slowly along the circumference. There's no scratch on it and time hasn't stopped once again.
"It will take some time for him to get used to you," she says, shrugging. That doesn't make Steve feel any better. "He thinks your piloting skills could be more..." Her eyes narrow as she purses her lips in mock thought. "What did he say? Refined?"
His brows shoot up in disbelief, causing Diana to laugh loudly. Thunder booms above them as if Zeus himself is laughing too. She peers up at the sky with a bright smile and lightning flashes soundly above them.
"My piloting skills are fine, you know. I was the best in my class." He watches her smile only widen and he peers up at the sky. "Zeus, sir! My piloting skills are fine!"
Thunderclaps and lightning strikes simultaneously against the clouds. They grow darker and thicker and roll across the landscape of the heavens.
He swallows and mutters, "Okay, I'll reconsider my stance."
Diana threads her fingers with his and pulls him closer to the sharpness of her armour. It doesn't cut him. Unlike everyone else, it doesn't even leave a bruise.
"You have nothing to worry about, Steve." She pats his hair with her other hand, threading her fingers through the thick fluffy strands. "It's my mother you need to impress."
With his heart dropping to his feet and the colour draining from his face, the thunder and lightning clap three times before the thick, dark grey clouds thin and pull away, slowly revealing the startling bright sun. Diana tugs on his hand and laughs as she guides him through the quiet city streets.
