Summary: Bonnie makes an unexpected friend at a local fundraiser.

“I can’t believe you talked me into this.”

Rich people in fancy dress swarm the room, creating dazzling swirls of color and sparkle. Bonnie, on the other hand, is eyeing the place with no small amount of distaste. Crowds like this usually mean trying to present herself as something more than she is, and she’s honestly not in the mood. While most of the people in the room treat her with respect, she doesn’t want to hold her tongue when it comes to how they treat Caroline, and those outbursts usually end in Caroline not getting the funds she needs for her school.

Who knew that wealthy, old bloodline witches could be so judgy?

“I know, I know this isn’t your favorite thing,” Caroline sighs as she turns to face her, grabbing two flutes of champagne off one of the passing trays as they go. “But the Bennett name carries a lot of weight around here. I swear, all you have to do is hang out and enjoy the food, and I will do all the talking, I promise.”

“… Promise me you won’t let them dig into you too much. You might not be Mikaelson or Salvatore famous, but you’re still Caroline Forbes.” Bonnie smiles softly at her friend. “You are a person, and you’re doing a good thing.”

Caroline smiles before leaning in and pulling her friend into a quick hug. “I know. I won’t. And if I get in over my head, I’ll give you the signal, and you can hex them.”

Bonnie laughs, before nodding and waving her off. “Okay, go. Network to your heart’s content.”

Caroline flashes her a bright smile before turning and heading off to the nearest cluster of witches. Bonnie takes a long sip of her champagne as she watches her, before shaking her head. “One more night and I can hit the road again.”

“Seems like you’re already as done with this thing as I am.”

The voice comes from over her shoulder. She whirls on her heels, spooked. She eyes the newcomer with curiosity, taking in the warmth of his dark skin As his hands come up in a sign of surrender, almost as though he’s preparing to block a blow before it even arrives.

“Sorry,” he says, soothing her slightly. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“It’s alright. I wasn’t expecting anyone actually to want to talk to me.” And then, out of curiosity, she holds her hand out to him. “Bonnie Bennett.”

“Vincent Griffith,” he nods as he shakes her hand. “I hope you don’t take it as an insult when I say that your reputation precedes you.”

“Only if it doesn’t when I say the same of you.” Bonnie takes him in more seriously now, trying to take the measure of the man in front of her. She’s heard many different stories about the former regent of New Orleans, turned de facto leader, and a lot good, at least to her. Then again, she’s always been a big fan of breaking the wheel, no matter what shape that takes. “What you did for the New Orleans witches was … incredible.”

“That’s funny. In some ways, it seemed like the least I could do.” Vincent glances over to the rest of the room. “Though some would also say this is, and I’m not sure I agree with them.”

Bonnie can’t help but raise an eyebrow curiously. “I’m here so that my best friend can tote me around like a magical clout machine. What’s your excuse?”

He laughs, before shaking his head. “I don’t know. So that I can make sure that these rich assholes do right by kids like mine? I mean, my kids will have the money. But there are a lot of kids in the Quarter who don’t. They deserve to have a school like this just as much as everyone else.”

Bonnie frowns, glancing back over the rest of the room, all the privilege and power contained within it, and nods. “I never really thought about it like that. But then again, I don’t have kids I’m looking after.”

Vincent nods. “They do tend to make things more complicated than they should be.”

“That they do.” Before reaching over and grabbing one of the dessert plates that happened to be wandering nearby, Bonnie considers. “Why don’t we take advantage of the fancy food and drink, and you tell me about some of your kids? I’ll admit, I’m curious about how things are in New Orleans.”

Vincent smiles, before glancing over to tables clustered in the corner. “You sure Caroline won’t mind if you disappear?”

Bonnie shrugs. “She knows where to find me when she needs me. And I think, for the most part, she just wanted me to be around and look pretty anyway.”

Vincent laughs, before turning and offering his arm. “Then shall we?”

Bonnie grins as she takes his arm, before following his lead. “We shall.”

I guess Bonnie's glad now that Caroline dragged her along.

I like your intro, especially "Crowds like this usually mean trying to present herself as something more than she is". But it sounds like Bonnie's having at least a bit better time by the end of the story!

It sounds like these two might be about to strike up a friendship in the most unlikely of places.
