[#007] Driving (Supernatural)

Theme Prompt: #007 - Traveling
Title: Driving
Fandom: Supernatural
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: yes
Word Count: 501
Summary: Dean and his car

Dean loved driving.

It was a transition space, one where he couldn't do anything else at the same time. That meant, no matter what other crap was going on in the world, he had no other responsibilities in that moment. Wherever he was going, and for whatever purpose, his only task on the journey was to drive. His body knew the required actions and undertook them without conscious thought on his part.

There was something about the act of driving that calmed him. It was best when he was alone in the car, and could let go of any other distractions, and just drive. It required just enough concentration that he could prevent himself from getting wrapped up too much in other concerns. His mind entered an almost trance-like state, where nothing existed but him and the road.

Dean loved his car.

The engine purred beneath him, the seat was moulded to his body shape by long use, the night air rushed past, unable to touch him. The car was the home he had never had, the safety that had never been present in his childhood, an extension of himself. It nurtured him, enclosing him in its metal and leather embrace, not judging him or expecting anything of him. It belonged to him in a way that nothing else in his transitory existence did, and he belonged to it in a way that nobody else would ever understand.

Working on the car brought him peace, which was an increasingly rare feeling for Dean. It was something he loved and was good at. His life and actions were so consumed by destruction and death, that having something to do that produced a positive result, improving rather than obliterating, sometimes felt like the only thing still anchoring him to sanity.

Besides, having the car working at peak performance could also be important to his physical health. The number of times the car had saved his life, in one way or another, were now beyond counting. It was the least he could do to give her some loving care and make sure she was as clean and tuned up as he could get her, in the rare moments he had a chance to work on her.

Dean loved his music.

He had built up his collection of cassette tapes over many years on the road. He only ever got to listen to them in the car, so he associated the emotional release of the music with the act of traveling. There was nothing quite like speeding along an empty highway in the middle of the night, with his favourite Metallica song blaring on the stereo. The whole world went away, and there was nothing but the freedom of the open road and the power of the car all around him. It was in that moment that Dean could truly be himself, not any of the roles the universe had forced upon him. Just Dean Winchester, answering to no-one, not even himself.

He felt free.

Ahhhhhh I'm so glad you wrote from SPN anyway, because this was beautiful and perfect. Dean and his car is one of my favorite relationships on the show and you did this really well.
