[#071] Tell that Devil to Take You Back (Original)
Theme Prompt: #071 – Skeletons in the Closet
Title: Tell that Devil to Take You Back
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: (Language, violence, mature content, spoilers?)
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 868
Summary: Orion tries to get Carina out of Pavo’s reach, but old debts come to call.
“Orion, slow down.”
His hand is firm against her arm as he drags her through the streets of Vesper, trying to find someplace quiet to have this conversation. As far as Orion is concerned, nowhere is safe. This entire town is full of the Sculptor’s men because he was stupid enough to believe that his past wouldn’t catch up to him. There’s no time to slow down, no time even to explain, because he can feel the binding curse start to crawl up the spine like a chill, reminding him that in the end, he doesn’t genuinely have a choice.
They step into an alley, and Carina plants her feet, yanking back against his arm and demanding that he face her. Carina is tiny, any person would underestimate her, but it’s in that moment that she reminds him of the strength of her stubbornness and the amount of power she has in a single gesture. She’s the kind of woman who demands deference because she knows it is due to her, and most of the time, he gives it to her willingly.
This time isn’t one where he can afford it.
“We need to get off this rock, Rina. We don’t have time.”
“Why? For what? Tell me.”
He looks down into her pleading eyes, takes in the way she trusts him, and closes his eyes to look away. He knows he’s going to have to break that trust, and that’s only going to make it harder to get her away from here.
“Can’t we do this on the ship?”
“No. We’re going to do this now.” Carina yanks her arm out of his grip, crossing them in front of her chest like a petulant child. He doesn’t blame her. She’s spent so much of her life with people trying to force her from one captor to another. He’s going to be one more man shoving her into a box, and that’s not who he ever wanted to be.
He opens his mouth to speak, another attempt at persuasion when his body locks up. Emerald green magic spreads over him like tiny fractures against his dark skin, and it holds him in place. Almost immediately, the color drains from Carina’s face, and she takes a step backward, away from him.
“That’s Pavo’s magic.”
His eyes fall, the only part of him that’s able to move at the moment. He could try and explain and try to make sense to Carina, but he knows that he doesn't have the time if she’s going to get away.
“Run, Carina. You have to go.”
She’s already starting to move. She glances back over her shoulder, searching for a clean exit before trying to move around Orion’s frozen form and escape, but she’s too slow. Pavo’s men appear at both entrances to the alleyway before the prim peacock himself appears behind her. His extravagant clothing glints in the fading life as he addresses both of them with a wide smile.
“So grateful for your help, Orion,” he smiles, waving his men forward to take charge of Carina. A fist flies forward as they get close enough, clocking one of them across the chin. The other gets his arms around her from behind, and she kicks wildly, tipping her head back to clock him in the chin. The goon lets her go in surprise, and she swings around to punch him in the face again.
Carina turns and faces Pavo, and her hand goes for the knife on her belt, but his hand comes up quickly, and she becomes enshrouded in the same emerald green magic. It immobilizes her quickly, no matter how hard she struggles, and Pavo smiles as he takes a step closer, around her to where he’s meeting Orion’s eyes.
“No matter how hard you try, you can’t hide who you really are. Can you, Orion?”
Orion wills his limbs to move strains against the spell's constraints to try and breakthrough, but he doesn’t have the skill for it. He’s never had a talent for magic. It doesn’t change the fact that he’s helpless to fight back as the remaining goons lift Carina from the ground and carry her out of the alleyway towards their waiting ship. His eyes track her as she passes in front of him.
“I’m sorry,” he whispers. Carina won’t even look at him, so he doesn’t think she heard it. He then turns his attention back to Pavo. “Are we even now?”
Pavo raises an eyebrow. “That’s all you have to say?”
“Call me crazy for wanting to make sure I don’t owe you anything else.”
Pavo’s face flattens in response before waving his hand, dropping the magic holding Orion in place. “As gauche as it is, yes. We’re even. But here I thought we were friends.”
Orion stumbles away from him as he regains his balance before stepping out, heading in the opposite direction of the man’s ship.
“Not friends,” Orion shakes his head. “You’ll pay for this.”
He doesn’t stick around to watch Pavo roll his eyes as he walks away. Instead, he keeps his head down and begins forming another plan. He’s going to get Carina back, no matter what it takes.
