[#073] We Can Make it if We Run (Original)
Theme Prompt: #073 – Burning Bridges
Title: We Can Make it if We Run
Fandom:
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 986
Summary: Orion tries to mend things with Carina.
“Where are you going?”
Orion knows he shouldn’t be pushing his luck. Perseus just barely got Carina to calm down enough to have a civil conversation about their options, and his cheek still stings with the punch she had laid on him the moment she saw him. Things aren’t better between them, they may never be, but when he sees her head out towards the exterior of the compound and away from safety, he can’t help but follow her.
He didn’t risk everything to get her out, so Pavo could recapture her again.
“None of your business!” She spits back, not slowing down for a second. He pauses just outside the door to take a breath and calm himself down before turning to stride after her.
“Carina, stop!”
“I just want some air.”
“Then, I’ll go with you.”
Carina finally stops at the head of the hallway, turning to face him again. Her hands are already curled into fists, waiting to deliver the same punishment that she had earlier if he pushes her too much. “Are you asking to get punched in the face again?”
“No, I would prefer you didn’t.” He holds up his hands as a gesture of surrender. “But it’s not exactly the safest place to be out there, so it’s usually better to employ the buddy system. Right now, I’m the only buddy you’ve got.”
Carina stews in silence, almost as though she’s hoping that someone else will appear around the corner to save her from this conversation, but when no one comes, she huffs, turning to head towards the door again. “Fine. But we’re not talking about it.”
Orion rolls his eyes as he falls in step behind her again. “So what? You expect me to follow you in silence? That’s a little creepy, Rina.”
“Well, I sure as hell don’t want to hear your voice, so those are your options.” She stops at the entranceway to the compound, scans the door as though she’s searching for an answer. When she doesn’t find it, she huffs again and gestures for him to step ahead of her. “Can you unlock it?”
Orion smirks, before moving closer, and punching in the requisite code. She smells like jasmine and lavender, and he wants to lean in closer and hold on to those memories, but he knows if he tries too hard, she’ll throw an accelerant on this bridge she’s trying to burn. He needs to stay focused and play his cards right if he doesn’t want her to hate him any more than she already does.
The steel doors slide open, and she begins striding forward again, and he steps out after her. He quickly locks it before following her up the steep path that crawls the side of the Chasam.
The sun is just starting to come up over the canyon's ridge, illuminating many things, including the sparse flowers and vegetation growing below. He’s usually not out here at this time of the morning, and he has to admit, it’s quite beautiful. Still, Vesper's twin suns rising over the canyon means they won’t have a lot of cover, and he keeps his eyes on the skies, just in case. He keeps pace just behind Carina as she heads upwards, one hand staying pressed to the side of the canyon to keep herself steady.
“Where are we going?”
“Up top. Just for a few minutes.”
“Not a lot of cover up there.”
“Why does that matter?” She throws a glance back over her shoulder. “Are Pavo’s friends waiting for us up there? Have you called them already?”
He sighs, tipping his head back to try and keep himself calm. “I didn’t want that to happen, Rina. You have to know that.”
“Do I? I don’t have to know anything.” She stops as she crests the ridge, and he sees the pair of gliders, sitting there waiting for the pair to return. “What I do know is that you sold me out to Pavo to settle a debt.”
“He didn’t give me a choice! I was trying to get you off-planet before he caught up with us. I didn’t think …” He didn’t think what? That it wouldn’t come back to bite him? That making a deal with the devil wouldn’t cost him his soul? “That deal happened so long before I even met you. I didn’t think about what it would cost me.”
She falls silent, but he can still see the anger shaking in her shoulders. “That’s the thing about a cost, Orion. Once you pay it, you can’t get it back.”
His head drops, eyes falling to the ground in front of him. “Me getting you off Prosperina – it wasn’t about trying to win you back. I just wanted you to be free.”
“I know. But actions have consequences, and now Pavo has my sister instead.” She takes a deep breath before stepping forward, closer to him. “I don’t think there’s any making this better.”
That hurts, more than he would care to admit. He looks up at Carina, about to ask how slim a chance it may be when he sees a missile shell crest out of the sky from behind her. As it drops, he acts on instinct, grabbing her by the waist and throwing them both to the ground, using his body to shield her.
BOOM!
As the shell impacts, a shockwave pushes them further, rolling them both towards the edge of the Chasam, but not quite far enough to fall over. Orion manages to brace a hand to steady himself over her before they both turn to see one of the gliders a pile of flaming rubble. He quickly looks back down at Carina, and her eyes are wide.
“They found us.”
He pulls them both up back to their feet before pushing her towards the edge of the canyon and back to safety with one word.
“Run.”
