[#074] Forest Walk (FAKE)
Theme Prompt: #074 – Into The Forest
Title: Forest Walk
Fandom: FAKE
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 999
Summary: It’s a gloriously sunny spring day so Dee and Ryo take Dick the dachshund for a long walk in a forest.
“We’re lost, aren’t we? C’mon, you can admit it, I won’t be mad. Promise.”
Ryo ducked his head, hiding a smile. “We’re not lost, Dee; we’re hiking. There’s a difference.”
“We’re probably goin’ around in circles. With all these trees gettin’ in the way, how we would we even know?”
“It’s a forest, Dee. Forests have trees in them, it’s what makes them forests.”
“I do know what a forest is.”
“Really? You surprise me.”
“That’s right, make fun of the city boy,” Dee grumbled.
“Hey, I grew up in New York too.”
“Yeah, but your folks took you places to do stuff like campin’ and hikin’ and sailin’ boats. Mother did her best but she couldn’t even afford to send us to camp. We’d get a daytrip to Coney Island every summer, maybe the Central Park zoo, but the rest of the time we just hung around the orphanage and made our own fun.”
“No doubt turning Mother’s hair grey in the process,” Ryo teased.
“Yeah, probably; not that anyone can tell what’s hidden under her wimple. Y’know, when I was a kid I used to think it was attached.” Dee shook his head. “So if we’re not lost, where are we? No, don’t tell me, were hikin’ in a forest.”
“Exactly. Look, you’re the one who suggested getting out of the city for the day so we could all stretch our legs, but if you don’t want to be here we can just turn back.”
“Never said I didn’t wanna be here, I just don’t wanna wind up stranded miles from nowhere with no phone signal and no way to call for help. What if something happens to the mutt?”
“As long as you keep hold of his leash he’ll be fine.” Ryo wouldn’t have minded holding Dick’s leash himself, but Dee tended to be a bit possessive, not to mention overprotective of the little dachshund, especially since he’d been the one who’d taken Dick in when his elderly owner was admitted to hospital with a broken hip. Now, almost six months later, Dick was still with them because the rehabilitation facility Mrs Holloway had been moved to didn’t allow pets. Not that Dee minded; he’d grown attached to the dog.
“What if he slips his collar and runs off!”
“Dee, even if you let him off his leash he’d probably just sit on your foot.” That was the place the little dog seemed to feel safest. “Besides, we’re only a few miles from the nearest road; it’s not like we’re way out in the wilderness, beyond hope of rescue.” They’d picked this stretch of forest for their hike because it wasn’t too far from the city, easy to get there and back in a day and still allow plenty of time to explore and enjoy the picnic Ryo was carrying in his backpack.
Dick was scampering about, sniffing in the undergrowth, chasing butterflies, and occasionally getting the long leash tangled around a tree, or Dee’s legs. He’d never been anywhere like this before and was clearly loving it. Winter had been harsh and cold, keeping everyone cooped up indoors a lot of the time, but now spring was here with milder weather, and the last of the snow had finally melted, the bright sunshine had proved irresistible. Who wanted to stay indoors on a day like this? It wasn’t hot out, still too early in the year, but walking was keeping them plenty warm enough.
“Fresh air, sunshine, and beautiful scenery; what could be better?”
The trees were coming into leaf and birds were singing among the branches. There were even a few wildflowers blooming, with bees buzzing around them.
“It is pretty here,” Dee agreed, beginning to relax. “Just hope we can find our way back to the car later.”
Ryo laughed. “Aren’t you the one always telling me I worry too much?”
“That’s ‘cause you do. You’re always sayin’ I don’t worry enough.”
“You just worry about the wrong things.”
The short spring day passed quickly. They ate their lunch in a clearing on the edge of a small stream before continuing along a circuitous route Ryo said should bring them back to where they’d parked, but around mid afternoon they found their way blocked by a deep, rocky ravine.
“Now what?” Dee peered into the depths but couldn’t see the bottom. “We can’t climb down and up the other side, and it’s too wide to jump across.”
“We’ll just have to follow it and hope it gets narrower or we can find a way around it.”
“Gonna be dark in a couple hours.”
“We’ll be fine; I brought flashlights, just in case. We should head downhill; that’s our best bet.”
“You’re the expert.”
Dick was starting to tire, he wasn’t used to walking so far and his legs were only short, so Dee picked him up, the dog’s front paws resting on his shoulder.
“You keep a lookout; bark if ya see anything following us, ‘kay?”
“Woof.” Dick licked his ear.
“Dumb dog.”
As they walked the ravine gradually grew shallower until at last they were able to scramble down into it and up the other side. By now dusk was starting to settle beneath the trees and Ryo dug the flashlights out of his pack before setting off again.
They reached the road without any more problems but instead of heading towards the parking lot where they’d left the car, Ryo stopped.
“What’s up, run out of steam?”
Ryo shook his head, pointing. “Look.”
Dee stopped beside his lover, setting the dog down, and gazed up at the sky; it was almost completely dark now, and starting to get chilly, but the stars twinkled overhead like fairy lights in the cloudless sky. It was breathtaking.
“Okay, that’s worth stoppin’ for.”
“You don’t get views like this in the city.”
Unimpressed, Dick just yawned and sat on Dee’s foot.
Dee draped one arm around Ryo and continued stargazing. There was no rush.

The situation with Dick is only supposed to be temporary while his owner's in hospital, but he's such a character Dee has grown fond of him.
Here's where it all begins:

And yes, if described like that a cat fits Dee very well. Still, somehow I feel like he is a dog-person. Can't even say why really.

Since Sanami Matoh never said if Dee preferred dogs or cats, we're free to make up our own minds =D
Each chapter links to the next, so there's quite a bit to read and I still have chapters to post, it's just that they were written for a whole bunch of challenges so I'm having to edit them so they fit together, and sometimes write pieces to fill gaps in the storyline *grins*
