[#074] I Met a Girl Who Sang the Blues (The Vampire Diaries)
Theme Prompt: #074 – Into the Forest
Title: I Met a Girl who Sang the Blues
Fandom: The Vampire Diaries
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 | Spoilers for Season 2
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 613
Summary: Two times Elena went to the top of the Falls to try and think.
The sun comes down behind the trees as Stefan and Elena sit quietly at the top of the Falls. The previously golden sky transitions from pinks and oranges to deep dark blue, revealing the stars you can’t see while the sun is stealing the show. It’s beautiful in its way – Mystic Falls is a small town that never has much pollution, but you still can’t see the stars like this until you head out into the woods and away from the noise of it all.
Stefan leans in next to her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head as they sit. It had only been a couple of hours earlier that Elena had confessed that she didn’t want to be a vampire to him, and he understood. He also knew that when the choice came down to it, Elena would transition. She didn't want to die at the end of the day. Elena’s only seventeen years-old. She still has so much more to do.
It’s unfair to put this choice on her at this age, but whatever choice she did make, he would be there for her every step of the way.
“Penny for your thoughts?” he asks, curiously.
“Just … thinking about how my life is never going to be this quiet again,” she shifts closer, letting her lean against his side more. “I’ll always be able to hear everything everywhere.”
“Not everywhere,” Stefan sighs. “And you’ll learn to control it. To focus on some things to drown out others.”
Elena nods then looks up at him with a small smile. “And you’ll teach me?”
“Of course,” Stefan nods. “I’ll be with you every step of the way. We’ll figure this out together.”
There’s a reassurance in that. Stefan can see it on her face because she knows that he knows what this means for her. The full moon rises into place, and Stefan knows it’s time. Klaus will be looking for her soon, and they can’t make this any worse than it already is. The forest below them seems so much more foreboding than it did when they climbed the waterfall, but one foot in front of the other, they carry themselves down to their fate.
Maybe there was no avoiding this, after all.
* * * * *
Elena returns to the top of the Falls repeatedly throughout that summer, without Stefan by her side. She remembers how he used it to remind her of her humanity, and she feels that reminder all the same with the burn of her calves. At the same time, it’s a reminder of all the promises broken, even if her humanity stayed intact.
She’s still human, but she lost Jenna and John. She’s still human, but Klaus is still alive. She’s still human, but Stefan is gone. She can’t help but feel like her humanity isn’t much of a consolation prize.
She doesn’t know why she sits here day after day, waiting for someone who isn’t going to return. Elena worries and struggles and hopes that one day Stefan will find her here again, and things can go back to the way they were before.
(But nothing ever will. You can’t go back, and sometimes getting what you wished for isn’t the boon you think it is.)
The summer air is starting to cool to a fall chill, and she looks up at the twinkling stars, wishing not for the first time that things could find a way to go back to normal. That for a little longer than five minutes, she could find a way to be happy again.
She doesn’t have her hopes up, but sometimes wishes do come true.
