The apartment is empty as they arrive. The silence of the brightly lit space speaks volumes about the people who lived in it. Agatha steps through the doors, taking a moment to ensure that her estranged husband isn’t home before glancing back over her shoulder to her brother.

“He’s not here.”

“Are you sure?” Jamie asks as he steps up, placing his hand on her shoulder. “You know, we don’t have to do this now.”

“Yes, we do,” Agatha nods. “If I don’t, I’m going to lose my nerve. Let’s just … get started, okay?”

“Okay.” Jamie squeezes her shoulder before looking around the rest of the apartment. “Where do you want me to start?”

“Bedroom. That’s where most of it is.”

Jamie nods, moving forward to get started, and Agatha lingers a little longer in the entryway, looking at the life that they had built for themselves once upon a time. This apartment didn’t always feel so hollow. She used to love coming home to Mark, to letting him wrap her in his arms or watch him cook her dinner. He was a good man, and he deserved better than this, but Agatha knows that she needs to do this.

She needs to step away from the promises, step away from the proverbial fairy tale. Sometimes, happily ever after isn’t a thing. Sometimes, people grow apart, and there’s nothing you can do. Her fingers play anxiously with the silver necklace around her neck, the one that matches her wedding and engagement ring that Mark got her for their tenth anniversary. They put so much time into this marriage. It doesn’t seem fair to walk away, and yet she knows she must.

Taking a deep breath, she grabs one of the boxes and takes a few personal items she knows are hers: a couple of mugs, some family heirlooms, that sort of thing. She clears out the bathroom of all signs of her, soaps, shampoos, makeup, all of it. Then she moves on to the bedroom, where Jamie is packing up her clothes, folding the shirts, pants, dresses into neat stacks to work into suitcases. He looks up when she walks in and lets her eyes linger over the bedroom.

“I’ve been trying not to ask because it’s not my business,” Jamie begins slowly. “But what happened with you two? Where did things go wrong? Did … he cheat?”

“What? No.”

“Did you?” He holds up his hands before she can protest. “I’m not judging. I’m just trying to understand. He was your Prince Charming, wasn’t he?”

“He was,” she admits. “And he was great at that. But Prince Charming doesn’t always last. And sometimes things … fade.”

Jamie nods, though he still doesn’t seem as though he understands. Agatha doesn’t even know if she understands. But at the same time, she knows in her gut that this is the right choice, and her gut has never steered her wrong.

Several hours later, all of his things are in boxes or bags, and she knows that Mark will be home soon. As Jamie takes loads down to the car, Agatha pauses at the kitchen counter and pulls out the letter she wrote Mark the night before. Agatha sets the manilla envelope down on the counter before reaching for her left hand and pulling off her rings. Reaching back behind her for the clasp of the necklace, she hesitates.

Her fingers slide down the delicate silver chain to the pendant that comes to a stop just above her heart. Another deep breath and she knows she can’t banish him from her life completely. She wouldn’t be who she is now without him, and a piece of Mark will always be there in her heart.

She leaves the necklace for now, as a memory for herself.

Jamie returns to the door and offers her a smile. “Ready to go?”

Agatha turns and nods with a small smile. “I am.” She steps after him, taking one last lingering look at the apartment before closing and locking the door behind her.

One story is over — time to start a new one.

That's sad, the end of something that was once good.

So sad how people just drift apart sometimes, but I guess it's better than being permanently stuck in an unhappy relationship.
