Title: I’m Sleeping All These Demons Away
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 698
Summary: Derek comes home to Beacon Hills, and it’s not what he expected.

Derek comes home on Laura’s heels after not having heard from her for a few days. He probably shouldn’t, but Laura is all he has left, and if she’s in trouble, he’s not going to leave her hanging. She’s his alpha, after all. If she needs him, he’ll be there.

But, she doesn’t need him. She’s dead.

When he finally does track down the pieces of her body, it hits hard, but the blow is hollow, like someone carved out everything that would help cushion it. Part of him feels invincible, with the idea that you can’t hurt someone who can’t feel the pain. Part of him wishes it had been him instead, so he wouldn’t have to live with it.

Derek doesn’t know how long he intends to stay in Beacon Hills, so he doesn’t see the point of getting an apartment. He has a goal in mind: collect enough clues to find out where the wolf is that killed Laura and then kill that wolf.

Obviously.

Naturally, Beacon Hills needs to make things more complicated. After hearing someone speaking in the woods, he comes across two teenage boys – one human and one werewolf. One barely-made-it-through-their-first-full-moon freshly turned werewolf.

He can guess how Scott got there. The idea of someone misusing his sister’s power to turn an idiot into a wolf engenders the kind of anger in him that her death didn’t. He barks out a warning about trespassing before turning and making his way to the burned-out husk of the family home. He ignores the footsteps, because of course Scott doesn’t listen.

Scott may not fully understand what he is yet, but he understands enough to recognize Derek’s sameness, the idea that he might have the answers that Scott seeks.

“Hey! Hey, Derek, wait!”

Derek doesn’t stop. He jumps up onto the porch and heads for the door. On the other hand, Scott stops just shy of the porch, looking up at the front door like this is some sacred land he’s not allowed to tread. At least the kid has some respect.

“This was your house, wasn’t it?”

Derek turns, fixing Scott with a glare that very much means go away. He can hear how the teenager’s heartbeat spikes that Scott very much wants to, but answers are weighing out over self-preservation. That’s going to get him killed.

“Are you living here?”

Again, Derek doesn’t answer. Scott seems actively concerned.

“It’s condemned. This place isn’t livable.” Scott pauses, and in a gesture that reminds Derek far too much of the kid he used to be, the one the fire burned away, he offers. “Do you need somewhere to stay? Maybe the sheriff can help. I can ask—”

“I don’t need somewhere to stay.” Derek doesn’t need nor want the sheriff involved. He’s well aware that he’s living in a haunted house, a structure hanging on to borrowed time, but he doesn’t intend to be here long enough to watch it fall. “What do you want, Scott?”

“You know my name?”

“Your friend’s voice carries.”

“Yeah, but we were all the way—” The realization comes soon after, the thing that he saw but didn’t understand. “You’re like me. Do you know what happened to me?” Derek doesn’t have a chance to respond before Scott jumps to the next obvious conclusion. “Did you do this to me?”

“No.” Derek couldn’t, even if he wanted to, which he doesn’t. Why would he turn a kid like Scott? Why bring in someone who reminds him so much of himself?

“Do you know who did?”

“No.” Derek pauses, weighing his options. “Do you?”

“No.” Scott frowns. He needs help. Derek knows it, and fortunately, Scott knows it too. Unlike Stiles, he seems like the kind of kid who can admit when he can’t handle something. “Can you fix me? Can you change me back?”

Derek knows better than anyone that you can’t. He doesn’t want Scott here, but maybe a pair of betas is better than continuing to live in a haunted house.

“No. But I can help you.”

He doesn’t know how much he can do, but maybe he can at least keep Scott from getting killed.

Nice. Derek might not like it, but he has to take responsibility for Scott. They're two of a kind.
