Summary: Sandy’s best friend proposes an unconventional celebration for the new year.

The clock reads 11:52 over the oven, and Sandy can hear the news commentary playing from the living room. She’s more than a little tipsy, and out of the corner of her eye, she catches a glimpse of Dennis, her best friend, getting ready to pour her another glass of champagne.

“Oh, no, no, no,” she shakes her head as she tries to wave him off. “I’ve had too much already.”

“You can speak clearly. You have not had too much.

She rolls her eyes as he tries to pass the glass to her. “Dennis.”

“Oh, c’mon. It’s almost New Years. We have to have a toast.”

Sandy makes a face because she knows they have to have a toast. That much is obvious. But she also doesn’t want to get too sloppy. She is going to have to handle the hangover in the morning, after all.

“Fine. Just one sip, for the toast, for the new year.”

She takes the glass with a sigh, looking around the room. It’s relatively empty, all things considered, though that tends to be how most new years start. She and Dennis, standing in her kitchen and toasting to a year that claims it will be better than the one before. Somehow, somewhere along the way, those wires get crossed, and the years turn into more of the same. Still, she’s unsure how to go about changing that in the grand scheme of things.

Dennis sidles up next to her, nudging her with his elbow as he settles in to get comfortable.

“What is it? What’s wrong?”

She glances up at him before shrugging. “Nothing.”

“Not nothing. I know that face.”

She takes a deep breath before turning to face him again. “I don’t know. I guess I feel like I didn’t get anywhere this year. No new relationship, same old job, same old friends.”

“Ouch.”

“Not like that,” Sandy glances at him with a small smile. “I guess I feel like I should have done more with my year, and I didn’t.”

“Well, the great thing about a new year is you can start over and try again.” He shrugs. “Improvement is not about big change; it’s more about the small steps we take to get there.”

“Did you steal that from a self-help book?”

“No.” He pauses. “Might have stolen it from a self-help talk though.”

She rolls her eyes before laughing. “It’s a good line. I can see why you stole it.”

“Thank you.” He leans against the counter next to her. “I’m glad you appreciate it.”

Sandy nods as she takes a deep breath. “And you’re right. I did make a lot of little changes. But at the same time, it would be nice to have someone to kiss at midnight.”

Dennis considers before quietly gesturing to himself. “I mean, I’m right here.”

She squints at him like he’s grown two heads. “What are you talking about?”

“To kiss you at midnight.” He straightens a bit, adjusting his shirt. “I’ve got plenty of practical experience.”

At first, she’s ready to reject the offer outright. This man is her best friend, after all. She’s doesn’t feel for him in that way – at least, if she does, Sandy hasn’t been aware of it – and she’s not out to ruin their friendship over something dumb like a New Year’s kiss.

Then, there’s a small, nagging glimmer of curiosity as she thinks about it further.

“Are you sure?”

“Why not?” He shrugs. “I mean, odds are it’ll probably feel like kissing my sister, but then we know for sure. Nothing could ever happen between us.”

“Do you want something to happen between us?”

“Do you think something happening between us would change anything about us?” Dennis pauses. “That question kind of goes in circles, but the point is, end of the day, you’re still my best friend. Cool?”

“Cool.” Sandy glances at the time. 11:58. Maybe it’s the champagne, or maybe it’s just the innate curiosity that comes with the idea of kissing Dennis, someone who’s been a tentpole in her life for as long as she can remember. Why wouldn’t she try kissing him, at least once. “Yeah. Okay. Again. Worse that happens, it’s like kissing my brother.”

“Exactly.”

They turn to face each other, staring into each other’s eyes, and after a brief patch of silence, she can’t help the giggle that breaks through.

“Are you nervous? Is that your nervous giggle?” Dennis teases, and she reaches out to swat at his shoulder.

“Stop, you’re going to make it worse.”

He grins as the countdown begins before taking a step closer, placing one hand on her waist. “Ready?”

She nods in return. “Ready.”

Five … four … three … two … one …

Before she can think about it too much, he swoops in and kisses her. She isn’t sure what she was expecting, probably because she hadn’t the time to form expectations, but it’s nice. It’s good, even. One might even go so far as to say it’s … great.

He pulls back after a minute before raising an eyebrow. “So? What’s the verdict?”

Sandy pushes up on her toes and pulls him in again, winding her arms around his neck as she sinks into the kiss. He slides his arms around her waist to pull her in even closer, and she lets the kiss linger a bit longer this time before finally pulling away with a breathless smile.

“Happy New Year.”

He laughs softly under his breath before nodding his agreement. “Happy New Year to you too.”
