[#085] I'm Meant to be Wherever You are Next to Me (The Flash)
Theme Prompt: #085 – Head in the Clouds
Title: I am Meant to Be Wherever You are Next to Me
Fandom: DCTV (The Flash)
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 607
Summary: Barry is setting an example his friends are having a hard time reaching.
Barry sits in the middle of the Cortex, drumming his pencil against the table as he daydreams over the piece of paper in front of him. The writing on it, a collection of short phrases, catches Ralph’s eye as he sidles closer, eyeing the words before pulling back in surprise.
“Are you … writing a love poem?”
Barry’s eyes snap back to attention, blinking at Ralph in surprise before looking down at his paper. “What? No. Maybe.”
Ralph reaches forward and snatches the piece of paper out of Barry’s grasp. His eyes scan over it before shaking his head: “‘Wherever we stand, I know I always want to be holding your hand’ – are you kidding me?”
“Oh, come on, it’s not that bad.” Barry reaches over to try and snatch the paper back from Ralph, but Ralph elongates his arm, holding it up towards the ceiling. As he does, Cisco comes in from the lab and squints at the two of them.
“What is going on here?”
Barry jumps fruitlessly before turning back to his best friend. “Ralph won’t give me my paper back.”
“What are we, five?” Cisco raises an eyebrow.
“Barry is writing his wife love poetry.” Ralph gives Cisco a look in return, and Cisco turns an accusing glare on Barry.
“Are you kidding me?”
“Thank you,” Ralph nods. “You’re already married, dude. Why are you working so hard?”
“What?” Barry looks honestly confused. “Just because we’re married doesn’t mean I stop doing romantic things for my wife.”
“No, but you could stop making the rest of us look bad.” Cisco doesn’t sound serious, but he is giving his best friend a look. “You already wrote her a love song to propose to her. You could give the rest of us a chance to catch up.”
Barry looks genuinely confused. “What does what I do for Iris have to do with any of you?”
“Women talk, Barry. They compare. You can’t just set the bar that high,” Cisco crosses his arms in front of his chest as Barry continues to look confused. As he does, Caitlin steps in from the lab, and she glances over the group in confusion.
“What’s going on, guys?”
“Barry’s writing his wife love poetry,” Cisco fills in. “Because he insists on setting standards no one can live up to.”
Barry rolls his eyes. “Caitlin, will you tell them they’re ridiculous?”
Caitlin smirks in return. “I mean, they do have a point. You’re making it hard for them to coast through their relationships.”
“Thank you,” Ralph nods before blinking as he listens to it again. “Wait, that didn’t sound complimentary.”
Cisco glances at Caitlin, gaze narrowed. “Traitor.”
Caitlin shrugs in return. “I’m just saying, gentleman. Maybe you shouldn’t be yelling at Barry so much as stepping up your game.”
As she turns to make her way out of the Cortex again, Ralph deflates, bringing his arm down and handing Barry his paper back. Barry takes it with a grin as he turns to head back to his desk.
“Thank you.”
He retreats to take his writing to one of the quieter annexes of STAR Labs. Ralph moves closer to Cisco, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
“We’re not going to let this stand, right? There has to be something that we can do about this.”
“Oh, there’s something to be done.” Cisco rubs his hands together. “I just … don’t know what it is yet.”
“That something is probably not finding a way to take him out, right?”
Cisco stares up at the tall man next to him, raising an eyebrow. Ralph shrugs in return.
“What? Just checking.”
