Title: Tell ‘Em the Way that You Broke My Heart
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 798
Summary: Cooper gets swept up to easily with a boy at school.

“Be careful with that one.”

Cooper glances back at Lucas over his shoulder. His twin brother had been following Cooper’s eye line down to one of the jocks at the far end of the hallway, and lines of concern etched into Lucas’s face. Lucas has always been skeptical of most of the people they meet as they bounce around between schools, never spending more than a month anywhere at any given time. On the other hand, Cooper was a little more open to talking to new people, just wanting to make friends and have an easy time.

Or, in the case of the jock in question, face a much more intimate situation if he had his way.

Eddie Barrowman was a six-foot, blond-haired, blue-eyed Adonis, and Cooper honestly couldn’t keep his eyes off him most of the time. But he’s not going to let his brother know that, as Lucas could be overprotective.

“What about him?” Cooper tries to brush it off as though the few seconds of eye contact Eddie had granted him hadn’t meant anything at all.

“Don’t be a little shit,” Lucas sighs as he closes the locker behind him. “He’s an asshole. Just don’t let him fuck you over.”

“I won’t,” Cooper replies half-heartedly, shutting his locker and giving the dial a spin. “Like he even talks to me anyway.”

“Yo, Sullivan!”

Lucas raises an eyebrow at his brother, and Cooper rolls his eyes, flipping his brother the bird before turning to face Eddie as he makes his approach. Smoothly, he leans against the lockers oh-so-casually, flashing Cooper a smile designed to hit you where it hurts.

“Hey, so you free this weekend?”

Cooper seems taken aback by the bluntness of the offer. “Uh. Nothing. Why?”

“I thought we could hang. Maybe I can show you one of the cool spots in town.”

Cooper shrugs, trying to keep it as casual as possible. “Yeah, sure. Sounds like fun.”

“Cool,” Eddie grins before clapping him on the shoulder. “I’ll pick you up.”

“Cool.” Cooper nods as he leaves, and Lucas steps out in front of him, raising another eyebrow.

“Be careful, Coop.”

“Yeah,” Coop nods. “Of course I will. We’re just hanging out.”

It was not just hanging out. First, there was a party, one with tons of booze but very little food, and then Eddie drove him out to one of the bluffs nearby, and that’s where things got heated. Cooper, fortunately, was smart enough not to drink too much, but just enough that when Eddie tugs him into the backseat, he goes without thinking and lets himself get swept away at the moment. But the time they’re done, Cooper’s riding a high that he hasn’t felt in a while, while Eddie seems to have come crashing down, the charm and ease that he uses to navigate the school.

“So you’re not going to tell anyone about this, right?” Eddie finally says as he pulls his clothes back into place.

“What?” Cooper blinks, unsure of how to take that statement.

“I mean, you get that no one would believe you, right?” Eddie replies. “You might as well just keep it to yourself.”

“Are you fucking serious?” It stings, sure, to pretend like nothing ever happened, like this didn’t happen. He knows that everything about what they did is complicated, but he can’t say he anticipated quite this level of rejection.

“What?” Eddie snarls, turning back to him with a dark look that Cooper knows all too well. Immediately, he regrets saying anything at all. He holds up his hands, putting some distance between himself and the larger man because while he’s pretty confident he could take him, he doesn’t need to make the situation worse.

Instead, he reaches for his clothes and pushes the passenger’s side door open. “You know what, forget it. I’ll walk home.”

“You do that.”

Cooper shoves his shirt back over his head as the car peels out of the parking space, headlights leaving him behind in the dust.

The sun’s coming up by the time he reaches the foot of the mountain. Lucas is waiting for him in the car. Lucas looks up at him and recognizes the regret on his face, especially when it’s a face they share. Instead of pushing it, he pulls open the passenger’s side door.

“There’s a diner down the way with pancakes. Hungry?”

Cooper nods, sliding into the seat and closing the door behind him. “Yeah, I could eat.” Lucas nods as he starts to drive, and before they reach the main thoroughfare, he glances back at him. “Hey, Luke?”

“Yeah, man?”

“Thanks for coming.”

Lucas glances back at him in return and offers him a small smile. “Anytime, Coop.”

Damn, Eddie's a douche. Poor Cooper. I'm glad Lucas has his back, though.

Typical Jock, doesn't want anyone to know he's into guys. Good thing Cooper has an understanding brother.

What an arse. This is why you need awesome friends and siblings to pick you up when you're down.
