The girl who shed tears died many years ago. Everything is all just part of the flow of time.

But she awakens from dreams of Tailtean, Dimitri refusing to surrender even as his men were cut down one by one, even as his friends tried to get him to back down. Dedue, lying almost dead on the battlefield, unused crest stone fragment clutched in his hand as he cradled Dimitri's dying body to his broken one.

Edelgard is never sure whether that was a better end for him. Dying peacefully with the one he loved, but his last words reverberated in her head even as the Black Eagle Strike Force marched to Fhirdiad. She asks herself such pointless questions again and again; what if she'd talked to him instead of stubbornly clinging to her own path, what if her uncle and Rhea hadn't been there to poison his mind further, what if she hadn't forgotten about him until it was too late.

It's especially hard not to think about this while they're still in Fhirdiad, dealing with the reconstruction of the still-damaged city. She'd spent one wonderful afternoon here with Dimitri, finally able to enjoy herself instead of being stuck in her uncle's manor.

It's so early in the morning the sun hasn't risen yet, and Byleth is still sleeping. Careful not to disturb her wife, she quietly gets up and dresses, saddling her horse. Riding silently towards Tailtean, where they agreed to bury Dimitri and Dedue beside one another after Rhea fell. It's all we can do for them now, Ingrid had said, her eyes wet with unshed tears.

Do you resent me for killing him? Do you wish you'd gone back to the Kingdom? She's heard Ingrid and Ashe talk about going back to what used to be Blaiddyd territory to build their home, but can they live there knowing they helped Edelgard kill their friend?

She kneels down, laying a bouquet of flowers carefully across the grave. His name and the dates of his life, Dedue's name and dates, the painfully short engraving everyone had insisted upon so they didn't have to think too hard about the lives they'd taken. Edelgard closes her eyes, and watercolory image of the past flashes through her mind; Dimitri sneaking her out of the manor, the two of them laughing as they ran through the fields, teaching him how to dance, playing with the dogs outside the castle gate.

Dimitri, ragged and bleeding, clutching Areadbhar like a lifeline, screaming at Felix and Mercedes to back away before he killed them, his body collapsing to the wet ground, Dedue whispering for him to get some rest-

She shakes her head violently, clenching her fist into her coat. Stop it! Dwelling on the past is what he did, and look where it led him. You did him a favor, cutting him free of those shackles. Nine years he'd spent focused only on revenge, trying to appease the dead to the point where he may as well have tried to bring them back. Only in his final moments was he able to let go.

He was barely living in all that time, and in the end it was all she could do for him.

The girl who shed tears died many years ago. And he wouldn't want me to cry for him.

The sun is just barely beginning to rise as she makes it back to the inn.
