Watching Over
Cougar’s grown used to rooftops, hilltops, trees, warehouses, building sites and any associated scaffolding, water towers and any other high point that might give him a good sight line over his team. He’s used to just taking in the whole, while really focusing on the specific, although he’d never be one to say no to the company of a spotter, even Jensen. Or maybe especially Jensen.
There are times when being a sniper is a lonely job, up above the world and watching, but he doesn’t see it that way. He’s the key to keeping the others safe, just as Pooch is the one who gets them out and away and Jensen’s the one who breaks through the tech to keep them all safe. None of them can do their job without the others in support, or maybe they could, but never so confidently.
Cougar’s just waiting at the moment, he’s in position early and just watching the overall view, getting the feel for the ebb and flow of people and traffic before the specifics really matter. He’s been teamed with Jensen for too long, he thinks to himself as he finds himself watching the people below and taking note of enough details to build stories. He can imagine just what Jensen would say about the guy below with the growing bald patch not well concealed by a terrible comb over. His gaze flits on and again he can almost hear Jensen’s exclamations about environmental damage through over use of aerosol hair products that would go with the towering edifice of a ‘hairstyle’ on the two women tottering across the road below him deep in conversation. He imagines they’re on their way to audition for a part in some theater production, he can’t think of any other reason to willingly dress in such lurid colors and have such outrageous hairstyles and as for the heels on their shoes… He almost wishes that Jensen was beside him instead of preparing for his bike messenger role again. Jensen’s stories are almost always better than the ones Cougar himself comes up with.
Then again, being up here, he knows he’s the one watching over Jensen and keeping him safe. He’s got his entrance and exit covered and he’s already identified two possible alternative exits should Jensen need them. Plus he gets the fun of watching Jensen perform, that’s often amusing enough that Cougar finds the corners of his mouth quirking into a slight smile, much as he tries his best to hide it. After all, it doesn’t pay to let Jensen know you enjoy his antics, as they only ever get more outrageous when he finds out.
There are, of course, downsides to being on rooftops – sunstroke will never be a good thing and there’s been more than one occasion when he’s been grateful not just for the shade of his hat, but also for the fact that the rest of the team look after him, making sure he’s safe when he’s making his own exit, even if it means one of them coming to get him because they don’t trust him to make his own way down safely after being in the sun too long.
Rain isn’t exactly any better. Cougar doesn’t imagine anyone would ever sanely volunteer to lie on a roof top in a puddle of cold water with raindrops dripping off the end of their nose and running down below their collar no matter what kind of waterproof clothing they’re wearing.
High winds aren’t exactly reassuring either, disregarding all the extra calculations making any shots entail and the increased risk of missing and getting the wrong person anyway. Snow . . . huh, doesn’t even bear thinking about.
In fact, the times when waiting it out on the top of a rooftop are actually a pleasant pastime are probably few and far between, but Cougar doesn’t mind that, not at all. Because here, here he is the King, he’s the one with the power to keep control, to keep his team safe and to keep the world safe by making sure that the right person dies or doesn’t die as the case may be and Cougar knows he’s good at that. Damned good at it.
And so Cougar will continue to spend hours at a time watching and waiting and knowing that he can and will do everything in his power to keep his team safe, to get Pooch back to Jolene and the baby and Jensen home to his sister and niece. He holds their lives in his hands.
