Rebecca burst out onto the rooftop, gun raised, and scanned in every direction for potential threat. She cursed under her breath when all she was greeted with was empty space. She bent double, hands on her knees, trying to get her breath back after her dash up the stairs. Her phone buzzed and she pulled it out, straightening up to look at the screen. It was Boyle.

"Do you have eyes on him?" she barked into the phone, dispensing with the usual pleasantries.

"No," Boyle replied, tersely. "No sign down here. Did you lose him?"

"Yeah," Rebecca admitted. "I have no idea how, though. I was right behind him, and there's no obvious way off this roof. But he's definitely not here now."

Boyle sighed. "I guess we head back and tell Naz he's in the wind." He sounded as excited by this prospect as Rebecca felt. There was a brief pause, then Boyle asked, "Where's Brian?"

Rebecca felt the familiar stab of panic that always accompanied this question. "I thought he was still at ground level with you," she said.

"Nope," Boyle said. "I haven't seen him since you ran off into that building."

The door to the stairs banged open behind her, and Rebecca spun, raising her gun again. Brian bounced out onto the roof, a broad grin on his face.

"It's okay, I got him," Rebecca told Boyle. "We'll see you back at the office."

She cut the connection and glared at Brian. "I thought I told you to stay downstairs," she said, her tone admonishing.

"But then I would have missed out on finding this awesome roof!" Brian exclaimed, spreading his arms wide to encompass their surroundings.

"What's so awesome about it?" Rebecca asked. All the rooftop denoted to her was the fact that she had let their target slip away.

"Look at it!" Brian enthused. "This would be such a great place for some kind of gig - or to put on a musical, maybe."

Startled, Rebecca looked around again, this time focusing on the features of the rooftop, rather than scanning for an enemy. The space was large and mostly free of obstructions and, for some reason, the wall that rose up at one end housed a set of seats, in tiered rows, like the bleachers at a high school sports field. Turning so that her back was to the seats, she finally noticed the amazing view out over the city. Brian was right; this would be a spectacular location for an event. Still...

"A musical?" Rebecca queried.

"Yeah, why not?" Brian strode out into the centre of the roof, turned to face the rows of seats, and struck a dramatic pose. Then, he broke out into song. "The brave CJC agents of the mighty FBI, fight crime in our fair city, and soo-oo-oo-oo do I!"

He took an elaborate bow, then turned and looked at Rebecca expectantly.

She rolled her eyes. "A musical about the CJC? Really?" Brian's random trains of thought were always weird, but this was crazy, even for him. "Come on. We'd better get back to the office and face the music - only not the fun kind."

XXXXX

Towards the end of the day, Rebecca was at her desk, slogging through overdue reports. She sensed a presence and looked up to see Brian standing before her. He produced a large sheaf of bound paper from behind his back, and laid it down on her desk with a flourish.

"Ta-da!" he announced with a wide grin.

Rebecca glanced at the top sheet of paper, and stared. In bold letters, it read, "CJC - The Musical." She flipped through and was amazed to find what looked like an entire musical script, complete with fully scored songs.

"What on earth - ?" she said.

Brian shrugged. "Things were pretty slow this afternoon, and today's NZT pill doesn't wear off until seven, so I thought I'd work on my idea."

"Don't you have better things to do with the government's time and resources?" Rebecca said.

"Not today." Brian's eyes sparkled playfully. "You're the heroine, of course. And I think you'll be pleased with some of the songs I've written for you."

With that, he spun on his heel and wandered off.

Rebecca shook her head, despairing of Brian ever becoming a mature and useful human being. Then, she shut down the report she had been working on, opened the muscial script, and began to read.
