[#092] Let that Fever Make the Water Rise (Original)
Theme Prompt: #092 – Into the Depths
Title: Let that Fever Make the Water Rise
Fandom: Original-ish (D&D 5e-based Original Universe)
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 846
Summary: Rafferty’s crew bites off more than it can chew.
“Well, this is new.”
Parker’s voice treads the line between amusement and surprise, enough to make the Rafferty look up from the line for the sail she tugs back into place. The water genasi follows her eye line to the horizon line in the distance. For weeks there’s been nothing but water, as far as the eye can see. As far as Rafferty is concerned, she would be content with nothing less, but she’s aware that the landlubbers of the crew got antsy if they didn’t set foot on solid ground every few weeks.
The Marionella crew has been out at sea for much longer than that.
She fastens the line in place before making her way to her captain’s side. Resting one arm on the woman’s shoulder, she tries to make out what the captain sees through the spyglass.
“What’s new?”
“Land.” Parker glances back at her with a grin. “Doesn’t seem populated, but I didn’t know there was a landmass out this far.”
“Neither did I.” Rafferty’s spent her entire life in these waters. A new landmass isn’t out of the question, but one of a considerable size didn’t just pop up out of nowhere. She raises an eyebrow back at Parker. “Shall we investigate?”
The human woman straightens with a smile before turning back to the rest of the group. “I think it’s certainly worth a look, don’t you?”
* * * * *
It doesn’t take long for them to find trouble once they reach the other side. After all, pirates are pirates, and it’s easy for them to be struck by greed when the moment’s right. They found a bounty of cold and jewels, buried in one of the caves nearby, and while they managed to hold off the beast who lived there and get away with some of the treasure, Rafferty’s nerves are on edge, as there’s a stillness in their wake that gets under her skin.
“Where is it?”
“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, Raff,” Munsen fires back at her as they load the treasure onto the ship and prepare to cast off. “Just get on the damn ship.”
She doesn’t argue with him, but a creature like that wouldn’t just let them get away. It wouldn’t allow them to slip out the back with their treasure, and they hadn’t beat it that badly. Something was wrong.
Still, Rafferty follows her captain’s commands, setting sail and moving as fast as the wind can take them. The waves are minuscule, almost flat, and glassy against the surface of the water. The wind seems to die almost instantly, bringing the boat to a halt, with the dark abyss of the ocean beneath them.
“What’s going on?” Jerome slowly makes his way to the boat’s edge before peering over the side into the depths below. His head turns to the right first, then the left, seeing nothing. Eventually, he scowls, starting to straighten again and turning to face them. “Something’s not—”
Before he can finish the statement, a broad dark tentacle shoots up out of the ocean, wrapping around his neck and dragging Jerome back over the edge. Rage floods through Rafferty as she reaches over to grab her ax. The next time the tentacle rises, she’s prepared, bringing the blade down with a heavy strike and severing the tentacle.
Black blood spurts everywhere, and the creature lets out a scream from somewhere below them. Across the ship, Rafferty sees another pair of tentacles rising out of the darkness, this time grabbing hold of the boat’s railings and gripping tightly. Other crew members rush across to try and beat them off, but Rafferty can already hear the boat's wooden planks starting to buckle under the pressure.
Two more tentacles reemerge on Rafferty’s side of the boat, also gripping the railings, and while the barbarian charges closer to try and slice them off, the creature is prepared. A third tentacle swings from her left, catching her around the middle, sending her plummeting into the water below.
She winces as she hits the dark waters but lets herself sink. Her heritage means she’s never feared the water, never feared drowning, but she’s willing to play dead for now if it means that she lives a bit longer. As she sinks into the swirling deep, lower and lower, she begins making out the shadows of the creature holding them hostage. Long winding tentacles crawl up the sides of the ship. Glowing yellow eyes peer out from beneath the hull as gnashing teeth bite down into the wooden planks.
Rafferty kicks backward, trying to stay out of range of the tentacles, and it’s not long after that the ship crumbles. Bodies scatter out into the ocean, turning the water red. The rage still burns under her skin, itching to do something but she knows that it’s a fight she cannot win. Not tonight, not now.
Powering her way through the open waves, she silently vows that one day, she will make the creature pay for what it did. One way or another.
