An Unconventional Victory:

Living on in the Force is an inconvenience Maul wouldn’t wish on his worst enemy, but that’s mostly due to Kenobi not finding it an inconvenience. Kenobi, aggravatingly, finds it a helpful tool. For Maul this is more than inconvenience, then he finds out what his legacy in relation to Kenobi will go down in the history books as and he knows that this injustice must be rectified.

An ancient Sith artifact allows his ghost to travel to the past. (How he manages to find and use this artifact remains unimportant. It was not a series of mis-adventures. It was not!)

Finally he is in front of Kenobi, who is so youthful he doesn’t even realize he’s being visited by his nemesis’ Force-ghost. Maul decides to start with the worst news. “I’m going to go down in history as your true love, instead of the nemesis that’s heart beat only with loathing for you. I willed myself to stay alive through the power of the Dark Side due to my seething rage that you had dared to try and slay me!”

Kenobi yawns. The audacity! Then he looks confused. “You use the dark side and yet you're living on through the Force?”

“I am a Sith Lord!”

Kenobi tilts his head. “You look very much like a Force-ghost. How did you come to be a Sith?”

Kenobi continues to remain calm and appears unimpressed as he asks several pointed questions about their attempts to kill each other over the years. It’s disrespectful!

“You continue to not understand the depths of our loathing for one another!” Maul complains.

“I can see how that would be a problem for you. Could you tell me more about your brother?”

“My apprentice!”

“I thought your apprentice was an Ezra Bridger?”

Maul grumbles, but allows Kenobi to ask more questions about Savage. Then he watches in fascination as Kenobi contacts a Knight Vos and starts telling him about Anakin Skywalker.

“You want me to...I can likely locate him and his mother. We are in the same city, but is there someone else nearby that can free them?” Knight Vos asks.

“It’d disrupt your mission. I’m sorry, I didn’t think,” Kenobi frowns. “I’ll find someone.”

“Try Tholme, Daith, or Kolar,” Vos suggests.

Then Maul watches with growing apprehension as Kenobi meets with different Jedi Masters and they all want to ask him, and not Kenobi, pointed questions. He begins to think that they won’t even let Jinn and Kenobi be the ones to respond to the Naboo crisis, especially after they send Master Ambrase to Kynachi to help prevent the Trade Federation takeover there. When things don’t go exactly the same as they did the first time around Maul begins to worry that his younger self won’t even be sent to kill the Jedi.

“You are ruining my perfectly good plan!” Maul complains as he floats around the hidden bunker the Queen, her guards, and the Jedi are hiding in instead of leaving the planet. “Do you even have an inkling of the way I struggled and toiled for this?”

Kenobi merely makes a sound of interest. He didn’t travel all this way to save their future reputation for this disrespect!

Finally, after everything, his younger self is standing in front of Jinn and Kenobi and their cycle of hate can begin. Except his younger self is looking past the Jedi to him.

“Your older self, your Force-ghost self, found a way to travel through time to let me know that history will remember us as each other's true love,” Kenobi says.

Maul watches as his younger self tilts his head, but keeps his attention on Jinn. Obviously he recognizes this for the distraction tactic that it is!

“He also told me where we can find your brothers. You have two,” Kenobi continues.

Maul watches in confusion as his younger self waivers, even starts to lower his weapon.

“My Master will..” his younger self starts to say.

“He’s being arrested as we speak,” Jinn informs him.

“What?” Maul hisses. “You’ve betrayed me!”

“You described for me how he betrayed you,” Kenobi reminds gently. “You told me he’ll kill your brother Savage.”

“Savage?” his younger self asks.

“Yes,” Kenobi says, taking several steps towards the younger, living Maul, without even igniting his blade. “You have another brother named Feral.”

“Feral,” the younger Maul repeats.

Maul feels himself start to fade. He’s changed the past. He’s not going to exist anymore. He’s not even sure he made anything better! He might have made things worse! This is a disaster! Except this time Sidious didn't win, so that means he won, doesn’t it?

The twists and turns of time get even more complicated when you try to change the past! Intriguing.
