Title: Turning Circles Time and Again

Summary: Kisa and Seth take a break for the night.
By the time they arrive back at the compound, they’re a little more battered than Kisa would have liked. The last hundred miles had been a sprint, trying to make it back to shelter before the morning came, leaving Kisa and Richie at the mercy of the sun. Add to the fact that some of the newest threats to their day-to-day happened to appear halfway there, and everyone’s a little beat up and a run a little ragged.
The culebras retreat to their corners while the humans secure the grounds, making sure that they’ll be safe to catch a few hours during the day. Seth tells her he’ll meet her after he makes sure everything is in place, so she heads to their room, closing the door behind her and basking in the silence.
No one said that stepping up to become Queen would be easy. No one said it would lessen the target on her back or allow her to worry less about taking another human lover, one who has no interest in joining her in the rank of the undead. But she’s doing the best she can, and as long as Seth doesn’t have any close calls, she’ll manage to survive this with minimal bloodshed. It’s easier, sometimes, to think of this as something temporary rather than stretching on for the rest of her immortal life. If she tried to consider it for longer than that, she’d find herself contemplating meeting the sun that much sooner.
The door opens, and Kisa tenses.
A moment passes where she doesn’t move. Where she waits, listens, and eventually hears Seth’s reassuring heartbeat as the door closes behind him. She never thought she would find herself reassured by someone having a heartbeat – something so universal to most beings on this earth. But when so many of your lovers and so many of your enemies have been culebras and functionally dead, having the one person you trust most have a steady heartbeat is a relief.
“Any news?” she asks as she turns to face him. She knows Seth needs to sleep at least a few hours to keep an eye on them during the day, but she still wants a status report.
Seth shakes his head. “Everything seems quiet for now. You should get some rest.”
She shakes her head. Years of being nocturnal means she won’t be likely to sleep for a while. Keeping an eye on the grounds from the window, she knows she has a few hours left before sleep will claim her. “You sleep. I’ll join you in a bit.”
“You sure?” He flashes her a teasing grin. “I’m pretty sure I could wear you out a little.”
She rolls her eyes to fight the smile that threatens to cross her face. She knows Seth’s mostly bluster in the sense that if she says no, he’ll back off. But the fact that he still feels the need to try, almost as though to remind her that she’s allowed to enjoy having a partner, makes things feel almost normal.
“Tempting, but not right now.”
Seth smirks as he moves to sit on the edge of the bed, preparing to strip down to base layers. “Just don’t stay up all day, alright?”
“I won’t.” It’s unclear at the moment if that’s a lie or not, but he’s willing to trust her with it for the time being. He nods, and after preparing for bed, he rolls back towards the wall and closes his eyes to head to sleep.
Silence fills the room soon after, replaced by the slowing sound of his resting heartbeat. Steady and soothing, it eventually lures her to bed. Kisa doubts they’re safe, not yet. She’s not convinced that things will be fine when they wake in the morning. She’s pretty confident that things will be worse and what’s coming for them will still come.
But the sound of Seth’s heartbeat acts as a constant, a means of keeping her calm, and for now, she’ll take the comfort it offers.
