[#093] You Should Really Talk to an Expert (Transformers)

Theme Prompt: 093 - True Love
Title: You Should Really Talk to an Expert
Fandom: Transformers
Rating/Warnings: G/None
Bonus: No
Word Count: 885
Summary: Greenlight asks Firestar for some advice that Firestar is not remotely qualified to give.

"Do you believe in true love?"

Firestar almost dropped an ammunition box on her foot, and hopped slightly to catch her balance. "Sorry, what?"

Greenlight stepped in to balance the edge of the box until Firestar could set it down. "True love. You know, where it lasts forever, millions of years, people write stories about it after you die in each other's arms. Do you think that exists?"

"Uh..." Firestar shrugged, ducking slightly so her wings wouldn't clip the ceiling. "I can honestly say I've never given it that much thought. That wasn't really the genre of holovid I watched. I mean, I know what you're talking about, but I guess I never thought about it as something to believe in."

"Oh." Greenlight shrugged and went back to assembling weapon racks. "They weren't exactly my favorite genre of holovid, but I...I've seen a few."

"Hey, no judgment, my actual favorite genre of holovid was garbage action movies." Firestar tried to suppress her curiosity for an overwhelming ten seconds before giving in and asking, "But you're not asking about holovids, right?"

Greenlight smiled weakly. "I'm not that subtle, I guess."

"You and Lancer are getting drinks together every night, taking patrol shifts together, and basically sharing a room without officially sharing a room, and then you start asking me about true love?" Firestar grinned. "Yeah, no, I know where you're going with this, and I'm getting the impression you really want to talk about it. Spill."

With a heavy sigh, Greenlight sat down, rolling the one assembled rack out of her way. "I don't even know if I know where I'm going with this. I mean - I haven't really gone out with anyone seriously in a really long time, and it hasn't been that long in the grand scheme of things, and there's a war on, so maybe all of that is just making things feel more intense."

Firestar held up a cautionary hand. "Uh, you know, I'm always happy to listen, but I don't know if I can give you any good advice. My last relationship was founded mostly on explosions and both of us knew we weren't in it for love, just for - uh, well, anyway, my experience probably isn't relevant. But if the war is making things more intense, does it matter?"

Greenlight blinked, fiddling with a handful of rivets. "...Probably? I mean, what if I, you know, make some kind of dramatic declaration and it turns out it was just that I'm really glad to be alive and she's also really glad to be alive?"

"Then you both laugh at how over-the-top you were and stay friends?" Firestar offered hopefully. Seeing the faintly wounded look on Greenlight's face, she sighed and sat down beside her. "Kid, I'm not making fun of you. Really, I'm not."

"I know." Greenlight tossed a rivet in the air and caught it before it hit the ground. "I know. I just don't know for sure what this is. I mean, I really, really, really, really like her, but I've never dated in a war before. I don't know how that changes things, or if that changes things. I don't want to hype this up as something it's not. Maybe I've seen too many holovids."

"Maybe." Firestar patted Greenlight's back. "Like I said, I don't go in for the true love thing anyway - I don't really know. Maybe you are hyping this up too much and it's just the war making you think it's something special. Or maybe you really are in love with her, this is your once-in-a-lifetime relationship and nothing will ever live up to it, and true love is real after all."

Greenlight raised a brow ridge. "You know that recapping what I just said doesn't really help me solve it, right?"

"Nah, I know, but I'm going somewhere with this. I think." Firestar flicked her wings, stretching up and back until the joints loosened. "Look, I don't know which one it is. You don't know which one it is. Lancer probably doesn't know which one it is either. But if you want to figure it out, maybe you should tell her what you're thinking and work it out together."

Greenlight looked at the floor. "You're probably right, but..."

"But what if she doesn't feel the same way? Or what if it isn't real?" Firestar guessed, and was rewarded with a nod. "Well, I'm pretty sure the only way you answer the first one is by asking her. As for the second one...I don't know. Maybe true love is a real thing, maybe it's not. But if it is, you still have to talk to her eventually. And if it's not, then talking to her about it won't hurt, right?"

"I think you're being very optimistic," Greenlight said dryly. "And I'm getting the impression you really think I should talk to her."

"Yup." Firestar clapped her on the shoulder and stood up. "I'm not an expert on love, and even if I were, I wouldn't be the expert on you two. Now come on. If we don't get this weapons rack put together, it won't be Lancer you'll have to worry about, it'll be Elita."

Greenlight shoved herself back to her feet with a sigh. "Yeah, you're right. Thanks for listening."

"Anytime."
