[#094] A Totally Secret Scheme (Original)
Theme Prompt: #094 – Secret Lair
Title: A Totally Secret Scheme
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 987
Summary: Drogon and his team of superhero friends make their way to their new and improved hideout.
Drogon leads the way through the woods, the rest of his superhero team trailing along behind them. Zap Man and Speedy are close on his heels. Zap Man’s eyes dart around, making sure that no one followed them. So far, the coast seems to be clear.
“How much farther?”
“Not long,” Drogon replies in return, his sturdy frame clearing the way through the brush to their secret lair. He had just put some new modifications in, preparing it for their next series of adventures, and he wanted to show it off to his friends. The ground starts to slope, leading down and away from the city, and Drogon gestures for them to follow. “Keep going this way.”
Zap Man nods as he follows along before reaching behind him and taking Speedy’s hand. “C’mon Speedy. We’re almost there.”
“I’m not sure I like it out here,” Speedy replies. “It’s a little creepy.”
“Don’t worry. We’ll be safe soon.” Drogon takes a few steps further before holding out his arms and gesturing to the group. Nestled into the cave at the end of the path was the most incredible superhero lair they had ever seen. Not only did they have a safe place to plan their next set of heroic schemes, but there were plenty of snacks, comfortable spots for each of his friends, and state-of-the-art villain-tracking equipment.
“Whoa,” Zap Man says, eyes wide as he looks everything over. “There’s so much room for activities!”
“And are those Cheetos?!” Speedy dashes forward with superspeed, but before she can get too far, Drogon holds out his arm to stop her.
“Wait. We have to use the secret keys.” He passes out the keys to his compatriots and shows them how to use them. “No one has these but us. We need to keep our secret lair secret, as our superhero identities.”
Both Zap Man and Speedy nod in agreement, taking their keys and using them to enter the lair to make sure they work. Speedy gets in quickly, but Zap Man struggles a bit with finessing the key to turn on the green entry light. Drogon frowns as he makes his way closer.
“Are you sure this is all the way in?”
“Yeah, I put it in as you showed me,” Zap Man protests. In frustration, a burst of electrical energy shoots out towards the computerized lock, and it fizzles before going dead. Drogon’s eyes widen in horror.
“You broke it!”
“I didn’t mean to! Can’t you just let me in with your key?”
“My key won’t work if the lock is broken,” Drogon points out until rumbling begins above them. “What was that?”
Zap Man turns, tense, and he spots a band of light in the sky above. His eyes widen, and he whispers, “She’s coming. We need to move.”
“Speedy!” Drogon turns to shout through the door, pounding on it. “Speedy, you need to let us in!”
Speedy sits in her command chair, licking the Cheetos dust off her fingers. “I don’t know how to do that!”
“You have to hit the disengage button! Quick we don’t have a lot of time!”
The rumbling continues, and soon the thudding, heavy footsteps turn into a massive alien robot coming into view to vanquish them, once and for all …

“What on Earth are you doing?!”
Hayley crosses her arms in front of her chest. Her son Charlie and his friends had retreated to the basement to play superheroes. Wearing their handmaid costumes, Charlie and Dylan seemed to be fighting over a torn piece of the giant box from the new refrigerator that Charlie had repurposed for his pretend games. In the meantime, Dylan’s sister, Gina, sits on one of the living room couch pillows, digging into a bag of Cheetos. Hayley can see a pile of other snacks and crosses her arms in front of her chest.
“Charlie, those were for school.”
“Mom, I’m not Charlie, I’m Drogon. You have to use my superhero name.”
Hayley huffs a laugh before shaking her head. “My apologies, Mighty Drogon. But the first question still stands: what are you doing?”
“I’m showing our superhero team our new secret hideout.”
“The superhero hideout where you’ve been stashing your stolen snacks from school?”
“You can’t see that. An invisible barrier protects the hideout.” Hayley raises an eyebrow, and Charlie pouts. “C’mon, Mom, play along.”
She tips her to the side for a moment, then smirks. “I can’t play along if I don’t know who I’m playing.”
Charlie blinks at her, surprised before a smile stretches across his face. “You’re the cyborg alien queen, coming to negotiate with the heroes!”
“Okay, okay,” she laughs. She straightens up, adopting the most regal posture she can manage. “Then, in that case, the Queen demands a tribute in return for her discretion.”
Dylan – or Zap Man – eyes her curiously. “What kind of tribute?”
She turns and points to the pile of snacks. “That’s a good start.”
“Mom.”
“I thought we were playing along. But if you would prefer, I set my legions of armies loose on your planet instead ….”
Charlie pauses before considers his negotiating power. “Can we keep one snack for each of us?”
Hayley nods. “An acceptable agreement. But Speedy over there has already had hers.”
“Thanks, Mrs. Carter!” Gina chimes happily.
“You’re welcome, Gina.” She waits for Dylan and Charlie to pick their treats before handing over the rest of the pilfered snacks. She nods in return as she takes them. “Your offering is accepted. Peace will reign between our worlds.”
She gives a small shallow bow before turning to head back up the stairs. Almost immediately, they begin to bicker over the broken door again, and she can’t help but smile.
At least her son has some imagination.
