[#096] Five Minutes to Go (The Umbrella Academy)
Theme Prompt: #096 – Center of Attention
Title: Five Minutes to Go
Fandom: The Umbrella Academy
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 || SPOILERS for end of S2
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 554
Summary: Allison tries to adjust to the brave new world.
“Allison?”
Her assistant snaps her out of her stupor and she realizes she’s been staring into her dressing room mirror for far too long. She blinks once, twice, before turning to face Marie and offering her a small smile in return.
“Yes? Sorry. Just spaced out for a second.”
“No worries.” Marie shakes her head. “We’re heading into scene twenty six soon, so Darryl wants me to make sure you’re ready?”
“Yes, of course. I’ll be there in a minute.” Allison waits until door closes before she slumps back in her seat and huffs a breath. She doesn’t know how much longer she can keep this up, but she knows she has to try.
There was a time when she used to enjoy being the center of attention. It’s why she went into Hollywood, after all. She was egotistical enough to believe that the world would love her from a distance, and no one had to know who she really was. But ever since she and her siblings came back from the sixties, she’s found it all a bit suffocating. But at least it’s good to know that even without the Umbrella Academy, she still found her way to the same place.
… Though likely with a lot less discretion.
Taking a deep breath, she straightens to stare into the mirror, trying to compose herself and get her act together. Upsides about this alternative world: she has a job and a house big enough for her family to stay in. Vanya and Klaus have taken up residence on her couch, watching cable and eating her food while the rest have ventured off to see what their lives in the unknown world are like. Except for Five, who has just gone off to do whatever it is Five does.
She honestly doesn’t want to know.
The real thing that she’s been struggling with is whether she wants to delve further into her life. She doesn’t know if she wants to look and see if certain key parts of her life still exist. She scanned through this Allison’s address book and Patrick’s name was there. But that isn’t a guarantee that Claire exists. And part of her is too scared to find out for sure.
If she does, and Allison still can’t see her, but at least Allison will get to keep the one thing she did right. If she doesn’t, Allison’s heart might break in a way she can’t recover from.
But now is not the time to worry about Claire. Now is the time to go out there and do what she does best—pretend to be someone else. Pushing up from the chair, she checks her makeup one last time, and then her hair. She puts on a mask of indifference and charm. And then she climbs out of the trailer to make her way to set.
She passes Marie on her way there, and the other woman reaches out to squeeze her arm gently. “Break a leg,” Marie whispers before letting her go.
The director looks up from the scene, and flashes her a smile. “Ready, Allison?”
Allison nods. “Let’s do this.” Then she steps up to meet her mark, pastes on a smile and lets the camera roll. Maybe she’ll remember why this is her favorite place to be after all.
