Summary: Luna brings Ginny into her mind. Ginny doesn't find it quite as pleasant as she was expecting.
"Well, you like my paintings, so I thought you might want to see where they come from. There are spells to do that, you know."
"Alright." she doesn't know quite how to respond, which seems to be a frequent theme with her girlfriend. It's not typical, but neither are they. So Luna finds some charm and they hold hands and murmur a few incantations. The muted colors of their cottage shift into something much more vivid. Luna separates, smiling softly.
The evening light is golden-orange, with the clouds turning the ground into the back of a calico cat. The colors swirl around in front of Ginny's eyes. It is overwhelming, but she doesn't want to look away. "It's…beautiful," she breathes.
Luna blushes, color seeping through her pale skin and turning her cheeks red. "So are you." Luna isn't fond of vapidity or platitudes so she can tell it's genuine. Ginny plants a delicate kiss on her lips.
They meander through the citadels and forests of Luna's consciousness until the sun sets fully. It is a world like no other. She can see the subjects of Luna's paintings here, even a glimpse of a woman she recognizes from Luna's portraits of her mum. She can't see much anymore. The world is engulfed in darkness, yet the stars still shine brighter than any other. Ginny's starting to get a headache from the colors. "I'm ready to go home."
Luna nods. They clasp their hands together once more, whisper the same words, and start to return. But before they fully arrive, a strange force yanks them back. It feels like Apparition, a pull beneath the bellybutton bringing them back. They try again to no avail. A shriek escapes Ginny's mouth.
"Merlin—no. Help, I can't stay," she blurts. The pain in her head is increasing by the minute and with it her panic.
Luna presses a hand to Ginny's shoulder where her yellow jumper is drooping off. Too bright, she thinks. "We can try again tomorrow."
Ginny collapses to the grass with tears running down her face. "You know when it's too loud for you and it hurts? The colors hurt me now. Everything is incredibly saturated."
"Oh. Close your eyes," Luna instructs. "Covering my ears helps me."
"Do I need a blindfold then like your noise canceller things?"
Luna laughs gently. It sounds like the bells Grandmother Prewett wore on her hat for formal events. "No, you absolutely do not need that, but I can conjure one if you like." After a few moments, Ginny finds her head in Luna's lap and a piece of cloth is tied around her head. "There." Luna strokes Ginny's shoulder-length hair. Soon enough she finds herself drifting into sleep.
Ginny wakes a few hours later at dawn. Luna is lying beside her underneath a thin woolen blanket, the kind they use in the summer when it gets too hot for anything else. Her migraine has vanished, much to her relief. Luna stirs beside her.
"You're finally awake. Good morning."
Ginny whispers, "Hello, darling." She reaches up to remove the blindfold, but Luna stops her.
"I think it's best you stay with it on until we can get back, it's light out now and it will only hurt you more." She stands before helping Ginny to her feet and threading their fingers together. "Pschius," they say in unison. Ginny couldn't remember the rest of the spell, so Luna guides her through it like their teachers did all those years ago at school. The difference is that Luna is paying attention to only her. Not like the teachers or her mum and dad. It's nice, she thinks with a smile creeping onto her face, to be the Earth to Luna's moon. Luna pulls her tides and she repays her for the guidance with a kiss on the cheek, fumbling and awkward with her lack of sight. The air slowly heats back up again, the wooden floorboards of their cottage springing out of the cool, damp gras. The blindfold is gone, having fluttered off sometime as Luna's dreamscape melted back into reality.
Ginny lets out a breathy laugh. She cups Luna's round face. "Promise to never take me back."
"I promise," says Luna. Her grey eyes are steely and focused on something behind Ginny. She is truthful, not that she would lie.
"Good. So...what happened?"
"I've been formulating some theories as to why that didn't work, mostly relating to your stress levels and inability to think straight."
Ginny scoffs. "I can never think straight around you." Luna tilts her head to the side so she adds, "That was a joke. Because I'm not straight."
The corner of Luna's mouth twitched into a smile. "Me neither." She puts her arms around Ginny's neck and pulls her in for a deep, long kiss.
