[#100] Nothing Standing in My Way (Original)
Theme Prompt: #100 – Perfect Day
Title: Nothing Standing in My Way
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 796
Summary: Jared’s having a rough time and his best friend aims to make it better.
The ruled notebook slaps down on the table in front of Jared, open to a blank page, conspicuously free of doodles and notes. He frowns, before glancing up at Sandy in front of him, a concerningly determined look on her face.
“Write it down.”
“Write what down?”
“Your perfect day. Write it down.” Jared must continue to look confused, because Sandy huffs, as though he needs to get with the program already. “I know things have been crappy at home lately, but I will not let you sulk your way through the entire summer. So, your most pie in the sky, best day ever, perfect day. Write it all down, and we’re gonna do it.”
Jared blinks at her before tipping his head to the side, curiously. “Seriously?”
“Seriously.” She nods with a smile. “You don’t think I can pull it off?”
“I didn’t say that.” He holds up his hands. “I’m just not sure why.”
“Because you’re my best friend and I love you. Does there need to be a reason other than that?”
Jared finds he doesn’t really have an argument for that one. “Yeah, okay. I’ll do it.”
The teacher arrives, and Sandy turns her attention back to the front of the room. As Mrs. Chavez makes her way through the lesson, Jared thinks hard about what he would consider a perfect day before scribbling down the list of requirements. By the time the bell rings, he passes the notebook back to his best friend.
Sandy scans over the list before turning back to him with a nod. “That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“Done.” Sandy grins as she bounces to her feet. “Keep your weekends open. I will make this happen.”
Jared isn’t sure what he’s signed up for, but he’s willing to ride this out to see what happens.

One day early in July, Jared receives a rude awakening from someone pounding on his front door. As he blinks into the early morning sunlight, he hears the uncertain voice of his mother calling up from the first floor.
“Jared? Were you expecting Sandy today?”
“I told him to keep his weekends open.”
Groaning, Jared forces himself to his feet. Pulling on whatever he can from around him, he stumbles to the stairs, ignoring the unfamiliar family health aid that is bustling around on the first floor. Instead, he focuses on the confused but well-meaning face of his mother, and the overly eager look on his best friend’s face.
“I was not expecting her,” Jared confirms. “But I was told to stay frosty.”
His mother looks amused briefly, before patting him on the shoulder. “Well, you two have fun. I’ll text you if I need you to pick up anything on the way home.”
“You got it,” he nods, before following Sandy out of the house. Her brother’s car sits in the driveway, and he raises his eyebrows at her curiously. “Where are we going?”
“We are going to do your perfect day.”
“What? You were serious about that?” Jared frowns.
“Of course I was. I don’t make threats I don’t intend to follow through on.” She smiles before tugging him towards the car. “C’mon. I spent weeks planning this. You’re not letting me down now.”
Jared shakes his head before turning and following her towards the car. What’s the worst that could happen?

By the time they reached the end of the day, the two of them park on the top of an outcropping of rock in the middle of a nearby national park. Each of them has a container of ice cream in hand, and Jared lets out a happy sigh as they look over the view.
“I can’t believe you hit all of it,” he admits, glancing over to her with a smile. “Even down to my favorite food in my favorite place with my favorite person.”
“Well, that part was easy,” Sandy grins as she inches closer to him, bumping her shoulder against his. “I already knew all the answers.”
“Yes you did.” Jared nods. “I’m glad you’re here with me.”
“Anytime,” she smiles. Then her face sobers as she reaches over to give his arm a squeeze. “Everything’s gonna be okay, J.”
Jared’s face sobers as well, and he shakes his head. “I don’t think my dad is going to be okay.”
“Maybe not,” Sandy sighs. “And it will suck for a while. But in the end, it’ll be okay.”
Jared reaches over and takes her hand, giving it a small squeeze. With a deep breath, he turns his eyes back to the sunset and nods. “I hope you’re right.”
Either way, even with the sobering reminder, this day is still as close to perfect as it could get.
