[#014] Always Here (MDZS)

Theme Prompt: #14 - Time of Need
Title: Always Here.
Fandom: MDZS
Rating/Warnings: G
Bonus: No.
Word Count: 996
Summary: Jiang Cheng visits his sister after the birth of his nephew.

When no one answers the door after the third knock, Jiang Cheng lets himself in with his key. It had been hard to convince himself that everything was fine when no one answered his texts but now he was starting to really worry. He nearly drops his bag of supplies when he sees what a disaster the house is.

The usually pristine mansion looks like a tornado hit it. Dirty, crumpled baby clothes are scattered everywhere like blooming fungi on the fancy Persian rugs. A half-filled trash bag sits against the umbrella stand, from the smell of it, someone’s been sick inside.

“A-Jie?” He calls out.

No answer. The house is silent except for a strange mewing sound. Jiang Cheng leaves his bag of soup ingredients on the kitchen counter, ignoring the staggeringly high piles of dishes and dirty towels strewn around. He enters the living room cautiously.

Jiang Yanli is out cold on the couch, asleep or close to it, with dried tears on her face. Baby Jin Ling is on her chest, making those strange mews, distressed while he slumbers. Well that explains a lot, Jiang Cheng thinks.
He retreats to the kitchen and then makes a few phone calls, putting in for emergency vacation time and letting Wei Wuxian know movie night is cancelled. Then he gets to work.

By the time Jin Zixuan gets home an hour later, the hallway is clean of dirty baby clothes and trash bags. Several windows have been opened to let in the fresh air, and there’s a pot of soup started on the stove. His wife and child are nowhere to be found.

He finds Jiang Cheng first. His brother-in-law comes out of the nursery as Jin Zixuan reaches the top of the stairs. A swift, assessing glance is all it takes for Jiang Cheng to have one of Jin Zixuan’s arms over his shoulder as he guides him to the master bedroom. Jin Zixuan nearly sobs with relief when he sees his wife sleeping peacefully on top the duvet, beneath a fleece.

“She woke up enough to tell me about the bug you’ve all got,” Jiang Cheng explained, as he sat Jin Zixuan down on the other side of the bed and removed his shoes. “Which is the only reason I’m not murdering you for leaving them like that. Next time call for help. And remember that your pharmacy delivers, you idiot,” he scolded, wiping Jin Zixuan’s face with a damp cloth like he was a big baby and laying him down on the bed.

Jin Zixuan can’t believe how refreshed he feels, just having his face wiped clean of the sweat and stress. It’s better than the most heavenly bubble bath, right now. “You are my favorite person, most in the world, next to A-Li and A-Ling,” he confesses with utmost sincerity.

“Shut up and go to sleep. I’ve got the baby monitor. If I catch you doing something that isn’t resting, I’ll break your damn legs,” Jiang Cheng retorted, covering Jin Zixuan with his own fleece throw.

Jin Zixuan is so touched. He loves Jiang Yanli with all his heart. She is the most wonderful, caring, giving soul in all the world. But she is a dirty, sneaky blanket thief. “I love you too,” he tells Jiang Cheng, a trifle giddy at the idea of sleep. “You are the best, I don’t care what anyone says. I mean it, Jiang Cheng.”

“Great, good,” Jiang Cheng said, blushing furiously as he stomped away. “Shut up and go to sleep.”

Jin Zixuan rolls over so he’s facing his wife and is asleep before Jiang Cheng makes it to the hallway.

Jiang Cheng has the third load of laundry started and the soup nearly done when he hears whimpers from the baby monitor. He’s upstairs, standing by the crib before the actual wailing can start. One diaper change later, Jin Ling is less fussy but not inclined to sleep.

“All right, A-Ling,” he says, eyeing the baby sling hanging on the hook by the door. “Let’s agree to get along, hm?”

It takes a minute, but he gets Jin Ling situated and the sling secured. It isn’t until he’s back downstairs that he realizes he didn’t take off Jiang Yanli’s frilly ‘Kiss the Cook’ apron before putting the sling on. Oh well. Jin Ling doesn’t seem to mind having his cheek smashed against the soft folds of cloth so long as his head is tucked under Jiang Cheng’s chin.

He shrugs and carries on, softly narrating the tasks of folding laundry and stirring soup, and putting away dishes. Jin Ling seems fascinated. Or at the very least, disinclined to cry, though he does make several squeaky noises that sound very kitten-like to Jiang Cheng. He finds himself hopelessly in love with his nephew all over again.

So much so that he doesn’t notice his audience.

Jiang Yanli wakes up and sees her husband sprawled beside her on the bed, one hand reaching for her even in his sleep. A flash of panic sends her stumbling towards the nursery but Jin Ling isn’t there. Then she remembers her brother’s arrival. She breathes deep, smells soup.

When she reaches the kitchen she is overwhelmed by the sight of her baby brother wearing her frilly pink apron with A-Ling in the sling. Her brother has one hand on A-Ling’s back, rubbing gently while he stirs the soup and makes up silly songs.

It is the sweetest, most precious thing she has ever seen.

“A-Jie,” Jiang Cheng says, surprised. “How do you feel?” He comes over and presses a hand to her forehead with a worried scowl. “You were warm earlier but you’re okay now,” he reports. “Come have some soup.”

“A-Cheng,” she replies, smiling up at him. “Thank you.”

“Of course, A-Jie,” he says. “I’m here for you in your time of need. I’m always here.”
