Theme Prompt: #101 - Nobility
Title: Gossip in the Grass
Fandom: MDZS
Rating/Warnings: Gen / None.
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 900
Summary: Three tired disciples take a moment to relax after a hard day of training. The peace lasts exactly three seconds.

Three boys lay in the grass, hidden from sight. They stared up at the sky shading from sunset to true night and listened as the rush of the nearby market settled to a murmur. It made the river seem louder and the crying insects more numerous.

“Do you think when we’re done with training tomorrow we’ll be allowed to go to market?” Nie Huaisang’s question was wistful and a bit whiny.

Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian immediately began to tease.

“I don’t think we’ve seen your saber once, Nie-xiong,” Wei Wuxian remarked, propping himself up on one arm to grin at the smaller boy. “Truly you must be beyond our humble teachings!”

“Of all the disciples, you do the least training!” Jiang Cheng added with a scoff. “You might as well just skip all together and spend the entire day at market.”

Nie Huaisang gave a light laugh, “Well then, Jiang-xiong, with your kind permission, as you are the heir to Yunmeng Jiang, I’ll do that. Thank you for your kind indulgence!”

Jiang Cheng jerked upright, glaring at both Nie Huaisang who was smiling his sparkling, sly smile and Wei Wuxian who was rolling around on his back in the grass, howling with laughter.

“You!” Jiang Cheng tossed a clod of dirt at Wei Wuxian and scowled fiercely. “Be quiet or you’ll have every disciple running this way expecting to find demons when it’s just you!”

“Until they see your scowl and go running back the way they came, shidi!” Wei Wuxian cackled with glee, clutching his sides, but at least pretending to settle down somewhat. “So scary! We don’t need to practice at all with such defenses, we may as well all go to market instead of train, tomorrow!”

“Wei Wuxian!” Jiang Cheng barked, blushing crimson. He threw himself back down, tucking his hands under his head so he was not more tempted to reach out and wring his shixiong’s neck.

“Don’t be upset, Jiang-xiong,” Nie Huaisang murmured, patting Jiang Cheng’s elbow lightly. “Your scowl doesn’t scare me and Wei-xiong is too silly to be scared even when he ought to be.”

“Isn’t that the truth?” Jiang Cheng muttered, but he relaxed.

It was turning into a lovely night. Glowing bugs twinkled in the air and the stars emerging to shine like chips of diamond against the black cloak of night. A gentle breeze swept off the lakes, scenting the air with lotus. Their little nest of grass was cozy.

“Say, Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian said, breaking the peace far too soon. “Why didn’t you invite Lan Wangji?”

Jiang Cheng felt another blush heating his entire face. “I did,” he said through clenched teeth. Suddenly his jaw ached. “He declined. He said there was no need.”

“Did you tell him you wanted to see him?” Wei Wuxian wanted to know. “Do you need your shixiong to explain flirting again?”

Jiang Cheng didn’t even bother getting mad. He grit his teeth instead, not wanting to yell at Wei Wuxian to shut up or cry because his childhood friend didn’t want to visit. No need.

“Wangji-xiong,” Nie Huaisang said thoughtfully. “Now there’s a man of true nobility. Strong and beautiful and just. He’s the best in our group, beside his brother. But really, Xichen-ge is as old as Da-ge. That’s practically an entire separate generation!”

“Oh? What’s this, Nie-xiong, do you have a crush on Lan Wangji too?” Wei Wuxian demanded.

Though it was too dark to see him, now, Jiang Cheng could imagine the smirk on Wei Wuxian’s face. He didn’t even want to think about someone else liking Lan Wangji, it made his guts churn like his dinner was going to come back up.

“Crush? On Lan Wangji?” Nie Huaisang sounded amused and a little put off. “No thank you. I merely admire him. But not like that. Besides, Xichen-ge told Da-ge that Wangji-xiong is trying to master a new piece on the guqin. Something he composed himself. All he does is study and play, according to Xichen-ge.”

“Ugh. Who wants to do that when there are pheasants to hunt and fish to catch and lotuses to steal?” Wei Wuxian asked, disgusted. “Lan Wangji is so boring.”

“Wei-xiong, you know the Gusu Lan take their music seriously,” Nie Huaisang chided. “If Wangji-xiong is putting that much effort into his music then it must be important. Xichen-ge says it’s for his special someone.”

For a second, Jiang Cheng’s heart soared. Lan Wangji was writing a song for his special someone? Composing it himself? For the third time he felt his skin grow warm.

“Oh ho?” Pure deviltry crept into Wei Wuxian’s voice. “Special someone, you say? Does Xichen-ge know who?”

“He did not say,” Nie Huaisang replied breezily, a note of teasing in his own voice. “But Wangji-xiong began writing the song after the last discussion conference, if that helps.”

“Say, Jiang Cheng, my sweet little shimei, what did you say to Lan Wangji at the last conference?” Wei Wuxian asked in a sweet, sing-song voice.

But Jiang Cheng was already up and running through the grass, sprinting back to Lotus Pier. His heart was pounding as fast as his feet on the ground. He couldn’t tell if he was angry or elated or embarrassed.

His sister would know. Jiejie knew everything.
