[#009] Mr Large's April Fool (Cherub)

Theme Prompt: #009 - The Night Before
Title: Mr Large’s April Fool
Fandom: CHERUB
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 926
Summary: James thinks he’s spotted the joke.

First thing in the morning, on the Tuesday after Easter, notices appeared all over the Cherub campus. They read:

ATTENTION!

All Cherub agents currently on campus will be subject to a special challenge, to take place this coming Friday.

New obstacles have been added to the assault course, and all agents will be expected to complete the course under combat conditions between the hours of 8am and 4pm on Friday.

Any agent who fails to the complete the revised course on that day in a time that beats their current personal best will be assigned additional toilet-cleaning duties throughout April.

The assault course is now open and will remain so all week, so that agents can practise on the new obstacles in their free time.

GOOD LUCK!

James read the notice, shrugged, and carried on into breakfast. He, Kerry and Kyle were all staying on campus that week, since they were between missions, and the other two joined him after a few minutes.

“Did you see the notice?” Kyle asked, breathlessly, stuffing a sausage into his mouth.

“Kyle and I are going out to look at the new course straight after breakfast,” Kerry added, “to see what we can find out before lessons start. Are you coming?” She started shovelling baked beans at an alarming rate.

James continued buttering his toast in a leisurely manner. “Nah,” he said, stifling a yawn. “You guys go ahead, and I’ll see you later.”

Kerry and Kyle both gave him an odd look, but were too focused on finishing their breakfast quickly to ask any more questions.

The dining hall was abuzz with chatter about the assault course challenge, and James saw loads of kids rushing through their breakfast and hurrying outside to take a look at the new obstacles. He ignored them, taking his time over his breakfast and sauntering to his first lesson in his usual laid-back way.

For the rest of the week, James went about his schedule as normal, while the other Cherub agents zoomed around him, trying to dispense with their usual tasks and responsibilities as fast as possible, so as to give them more time to spend practising on the assault course. James barely saw anything of Kyle and Kerry, and he assumed they must be spending all their free time training as well.

Finally, on the night before the challenge was due to take place, the other two cornered James after dinner in his room, where he was playing on his Playstation.

“James!” Kerry cried as she stomped into the room, Kyle close on her heels. “What are you doing? This is the last chance we’ll have to practise the assault course before the challenge tomorrow, and you’re playing computer games? I haven’t seen you on the course all week, and Kyle says he hasn’t, either. Aren’t you going to practise at all?”

“Nope,” James said, not looking away from the TV screen.

“I know you’re lazy,” Kyle said, “but isn’t that a bit risky? I mean, the new course is brutal - I’ve done it eight times already and I’ve only managed to beat my best time once. Do you really want to be cleaning toilets for a month?”

“I won’t be cleaning toilets,” James said with confidence, “and neither will anyone else. You’ve all been wasting your time.”

Kerry crossed her arms over her chest and stuck her chin out. “What are you talking about?”

James finally paused his computer game and turned to look at them.

“What’s the date tomorrow?” he asked.

“The first of April,” Kerry said immediately, “but what does that have to do…?”

She trailed off and stared at Kyle in horror.

“What?” Kyle said, bewildered.

“April Fool’s Day,” James said, his expression smug. “This whole assault course challenge thing is Large having a joke. He’s had you all busting a gut practising on the course all week, but he’s not going to make anyone run it tomorrow, trust me.”

“Seriously?” Kyle spluttered. “This whole thing is an April Fool?”

“I wouldn’t bet on it,” Kerry said, “and I’m not going to take the chance. I’m going to run the course again while it’s still light. Coming, Kyle?”

James waved the spare game controller at Kyle, who hesitated a moment, torn. Then he shrugged apologetically at James.

“I’m not willing to take the risk,” he said, and turned to follow Kerry out of the room. “See you tomorrow!”

James watched them go, and smiled to himself, safe in his conviction that everyone else would be kicking themselves the following day, when all their expended effort turned out to be fruitless.

Sure enough, on his way down to breakfast the next day, James spotted a new notice posted in the corridor. It read:

APRIL FOOL!

The joke is, that the challenge will go ahead as planned, so you’d better all be ready!

See below for the schedule of assigned time slots.

HERE’S HOPING YOU WEREN’T FOOLED!

With growing horror, James scanned the list and spotted his name in one of the first slots - 8:15am. He looked at his watch. It was already five to eight, so he would have no time at all to prepare for the modified assault course.

A punch on his arm brought him abruptly back to his immediate surroundings, and he looked round to see Kyle standing at his shoulder with a huge grin on his face.

“We’re in the same group!” Kyle announced, delightedly. “Race you to the start - or do you just want to go and pick up your toilet brush now?”

*snort* I love it! That'll teach James. or will it?

I don't know the characters or the fandom, but this is a really cute story!
