[#103] Clear Chiming Ring (MDZS)

Theme Prompt: #103 - The Jungle
Title: Clear Chiming Ring
Fandom: MDZS
Rating/Warnings: PG / Angst and anger
Bonus: Nope
Word Count: 617 words.
Summary: I used this challenge as well.

A more forgiving person would have described the burgeoning foliage and plethora of vibrant flowers as beautiful and lush despite the horrible humidity and the ever-present whine of insects. Jiang Cheng; Sect Leader of the Yunmeng Jiang, titled Sandu Shengshou, and fearsome hunter of anyone even attempting demonic cultivation; was not a more forgiving person, as his forbidding scowl and preternatural-levels of ire clearly signaled to anyone within a thousand miles.

The fetid stench of rotting vegetation and stagnant water seemed to ripen as Jiang Cheng, followed by a few chosen disciples, journeyed deeper into the jungle. Something gleamed amidst the muck by his boots and Jiang Cheng signaled his followers to halt as he knelt and used a twig to pry the ring free. It was a perfect translucent circle of some gemstone that chimed like a bell when it rolled against Zidian, the ring that was his secondary spiritual weapon.

“We were misinformed,” Jiang Cheng observed, then he ordered. “Be on your guard. This is no ordinary nighthunt.”

He slipped the ring into a pocket spelled for containment and continued on with his disciples, going ever deeper into the dense vegetation. They’d traveled several cautious miles for over two hours when a familiar figure in black and red robes came into view, lounging idly on a large stone outcropping.

Jiang Cheng could not hide his disgust or his certainty that, once again, he was being played for a fool. "Wei Wuxian.”

“Jiang Cheng!” Wei Wuxian bounced off the rock, all smiles. “What brings you out here on this fine, sunny day? A bit out of the way for a picnic, isn’t it?”

A foul-scented breeze raised the hem of their robes, giving lie to the ‘fine’ part of Wei Wuxian’s question. Jiang Cheng grit his teeth, holding back his curses when a loud pop and fizzle signaled the deployment of a Sect-issued flare.

All eyes were on the sky, Jiang disciples already mounting their swords and taking flight in pursuit of their Sect Leader, as the shimmering sigil of the Gusu Lan emergency signal glittered against the searing azure. Jiang Cheng paused only to yank Wei Wuxian on to his sword; then fleet as foxes, graceful as deer, the Jiang raced towards the beacon.

Jiang Cheng was not at all surprised to feel the spelled pocket grow warm against his clothing as the ring reacted to whatever disaster they were flying into. When the warmth became a burning, the Jiang cultivators came to a clearing where Zewu Jun and Hanguang Jun battled a towering column of swirling black smoke; Jiang Cheng ordered his people to join the fight.

“That spirit has been rampaging through the forest for weeks,” Wei Wuxian explained, providing the details of the long hunt he and the two Lan cultivators had been on, as Jiang Cheng studied the battle, and summed up with, “It’s lost something and won’t say goodbye to this life without it, we think.”

Jiang Cheng took the ring from the pocket, flying directly over the pillar of resentful energy before dropping the ring into it; by the time he brought his sword down just close enough to shove Wei Wuxian off of it and into Hanguang Jun’s arms, the spirit had vanished entirely along with all the resentment it had carried.

A bitter taste, like the center of a lotus seed, filled his mouth as he whistled to call his disciples away; Jiang Cheng led his people away without another word to the Lans or Wei Wuxian.

“It’s better this way, in the end,” he muttered to himself as they flew up and clear of the now serene jungle, headed for Lotus Pier.

Very atmospheric, especially at the start. I could almost smell the jungle.
