ETA: NAME EXPLAINATIONS!

Jiang Wanyin sipped his fruity drink, mindful of the fancy umbrella and comically large toothpick stacked with garnishes. The ridiculous novelty cup had its own little floaty ring so he set it in the water beside him as he floated gently with a neon pink pool noodle under his shoulders and a lime green pool noodle under his knees. He wore the shiny purple swim trunks Nie Huaisang had made him buy and had a matching pair of oversized shiny purple sunglasses shading the upper half of his face.

He felt ridiculous. But no one had bothered him for the last hour.

“Do you feel better yet, Jiang-xiong?” Nie Huaisang asked from his pool-side lounge chair.

Jiang Wanyin was at least more sensibly attired than Nie Huaisang, who wore sparkly bikini bottoms and an oversized sheer pink tunic, he gave himself points for that.

“It’s at least quiet out here,” Jiang Wanyin conceded.

“And the drinks aren’t bad,” Nie Huaisang prompted.

Jiang Wanyin scowled but repeated. “And the drinks aren’t bad.”

“Honestly, Jiang-xiong, was that so hard?”

“Oh bite me,” Jiang Wanyin muttered slapping the surface of the pool with one hand. “Like it’s that easy.”

“I have offered to bite you lots of times,” his friend replied airly, stretching luxuriously on the lounge and giving a little wiggle to go with his pout. “You always turn me down.”

“If I thought you wanted more than a fling, maybe I wouldn’t,” Jiang Wanyin muttered.

“Oh you would. You’re still hung up on my brother.”

Jiang Wanyin took the umbrella out of his drink, closed it, and launched it like a dart at Nie Huaisang. It hit the other man square in the forehead, causing him to yelp and fall off the lounge.

“If you know that then why do you keep teasing me?” Jiang Wanyin yelled, sweeping his arm to splash water in Nie Huaisang’s direction. “You’re the worst friend ever.”

“Aiya, ChengCheng! Don’t be so mean! Isn’t Nie-xiong your only friend? Don’t go chasing him off or you won’t have any friends at all!” Wei Wuxian’s voice carried, preceding the man himself.

“Oh fuck this,” Jiang Wanyin said, slipping free of his pool noodles and hoisting himself out of the pool. “You promised, Huaisang!”

“I didn’t tell him where we were!” Nie Huaisang protested, hurt. “I promised I wouldn’t and I didn’t.”

“How did he find us?” Jiang Wanyin demanded through gritted teeth, as he wrapped a towel around himself and snatched up his room key.

“Jiang-xiong, I swear I don’t know. But I’ll find out.”

“Whatever.”

“ChengCheng! Did you hear me, MeiMei!” Wei Wuxian shouted, running towards them, a huge smile on his face. “Is my pouty little sister mad? Drop the towel, MeiMei, show me those cute shorts!”

“Fuck this,” Jiang Wanyin hissed, and stomped off.

Nie Huaisang sighed, doing his best to smother his anger. Wei Wuxian had ruined weeks of hard work in less than three minutes. A record. He sat up and pulled out his fan as Wei Wuxian appeared. As usual Lan Wangji was in tow, a regal and condescending shadow.

“Nie Huaisang!” Wei Wuxian shouted happily. “You’re here too! Lan Xichen was right! Are you trying to get something going with my brother?” Wei Wuxian pouted dramatically. “He’s such a grumpy boy, be careful he doesn’t bite you!”

“Wei-xiong,” Nie Huaisang returned. “Wangji-xiong. What brings you two all the way out here?”

"I was looking for ChengCheng, of course. Uncle Jiang said they had a fight so I thought I’d come and cheer up my pouty didi.”

Nie Huaisang closed his fan with a snap. “They didn’t fight, Wei-xiong. Your uncle disowned him.”

Even Lan Wangji paid attention to that. Wei Wuxian looked stunned. “That can't be true,” he protested.

Nie Huaisang shrugged. “I was there. Jiang Fengmian threw Jiang Wanyin out on his birthday. We were only allowed to use the one room in the mansion, hard to miss it. The party was canceled so Jiang Wanyni could pack. He lives with me now.”

“What grounds?” Lan Wangji asked, speaking at last.

Nie Huaisang stared. “Well, here we go then,” he thought and put on his best smile. “That last contract. That Wei-xiong bailed on and left Jiang Wanyin to handle on his own. He managed to complete it but Wei-xiong still got all the credit.

Jiang Wanyin said Wei-xiong wasn't even in Yunmeng and your uncle told him he didn’t understand the family motto and shouldn’t try to take credit for other people’s work. Then last month at the party, Jiang Fengmian came just to humiliate Jiang Wanyin in front of his friends. Congrats, by the way, Wei-xiong, on being named heir.”

“What?” Wei Wuxian looked stunned.

“It was over a month ago, I’m surprised you didn’t know.”

“I don't want to be heir! I ditched that project specifically because I didn’t want to be heir,” Wei Wuxian protested. “It’s not my place.”

“Clearly you don’t want to be a brother, either,” Nie Huaisang sneered. “Seeing as how you couldn’t be bothered to answer Jiang-xiong’s calls.”

“Fuck,” Wei Wuxian snapped, raking his hands through his hair. “How do I fix this?”

“I mean, I’d start with being there for Jiang Wanyin and standing up to Jiang Fengmian but that’s just me.”

“Jiang Wanyin does not deserve Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji declared. “He is ill-tempered, inferior, and rude. It is no wonder Jiang Fengmian disowned him.”

“And then after that you can get your boyfriend to stop treating Jiang Wanyin like shit everytime they’re in the same room. Maybe get Lan Wangji to stop talking shit about him behind his back,” Nie Huaisang added.

Wei Wuxian stared at Lan Wangji. “Lan Zhan! Take that back!”

“Will not.”

“Lan Zhan! Would you let me talk about your brother like that? Should I treat him disrespectfully, too?” Wei Wuxian demanded.

Nie Huaisang sipped his drink. Finally, some fucking progress.

That does help, although it makes me wonder how anyone remembers who they are and which names to answer to. I suppose the characters are used to it, having grown up being identified by different names.

That makes sense.

Still, anyone growing up in such a culture would think it perfectly natural. It's making me see how little I know of other cultures. I'd be completely lost, especially now I'm getting older and my brain doesn't like absorbing new information

I can only imagine! I doubt my poor old brain could handle it!
