[#112] Raindrops (Don't) Keep Falling on My Head
Theme Prompt: Autumn Rain
Title: Raindrops (Don't) Keep Falling on My Head
Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 673
Summary: It hadn't even crossed her mind to take an umbrella with her.
"Does it count as forgetting if you didn't need it initially?" Mercedes asked no one in particular. Not because she didn't want to admit forgetting her umbrella, the whole monastery knew how forgetful she was and it was something she actively tried to work on. But the sky had been so clear this morning, the air so crisp and smelling of autumn leaves and cinnamon. Usually you could tell if it was going to rain within a moment of being outside, and if it was going to rain she would have expected it later than sooner.
Frankly, the thought of taking the umbrella with her hadn't even crossed her mind.
Then, almost immediately after she left the shop, rain began to fall. Large, fat drops, slowly at first and then faster, and Mercedes had to scurry back under the awning clutching the shopping bags. Asking herself a question she knew mattered little in the face of having to either walk back to the monastery in the rain or wait it out and feel bad for making the professor and everyone else worry.
At least the bags aren't too heavy today, she thought, but she put them down anyway. Somehow standing still made bags feel heavier than carrying them did.
"Mercie!" A welcome and familiar voice, then running footsteps. She turned around to see Annette hurrying towards her, clutching an umbrella which she then thrust into Mercedes' hand. "I thought you might need this."
"Oh, Annie..." Her hair was mussed, the bottom of her skirt soaked and flecked with mud, and she was out of breath. "I thought you had cooking duty this morning."
"I did! It came out better than ever, but I told the professor to save us some when I heard the rain start falling," Annette said, pulling her cloak tighter around herself. "I saw you leave without your umbrella and I got worried. The sky got dark long after you were off the grounds." Oh. Mercedes blushed. In hindsight, maybe it had and she'd just been too optimistic.
"I guess even now I'm still a scatterbrain," she said, picking up one of the bags.
"You're my scatterbrain," Annette said with a warm smile as she picked up one of the other bag and stepped under the umbrella. "Just like I'm still a klutz who trips over barrels and drops dishes, and you've never complained about having to help me clean up my messes." Mercedes smiled, wrapping the arm holding the umbrella around Annette's shoulders.
"Only because you helped remind me what I forgot about without embarrassing me." The rain was coming down much more heavily now. "Thank you, Annie." Annette leaned against her shoulder as they stepped out from under the awning.
"You never have to thank me."
"I know." But she would bake a batch of Annette's favorite treats anyway. Granted, she would have done so even if it hadn't rained and she hadn't needed the umbrella, but now she had even more of a reason to. "At least it's not a thunderstorm."
"Or snow," Annette laughed. "But we've gone shopping even when there was a blizzard, remember? Back in Fhirdiad?"
"How could I forget?" Mercedes giggled. "Our professor had to drive the poor horses out into the snow himself to rescue us! Lucky thing he was so good-natured about it."
"Or the time it got so windy my scarf blew away and we had to chase it miles away from Garreg Mach," Annette added. "A little rain's nothing!" It really was, and under the umbrella they were safe and dry and so were the food supplies for the rest of the army.
It died down, though, the drops falling more slowly and lightly as they walked along the well-worn path, and by the time they returned to the monastery grounds the sky was clear again. The tiniest hint of sunshine peeking through the clouds...and something else.
"Annie, look!"
"Oh, wow!" Annette's eyes danced. "No matter how many rainbows you see it's always a miracle when you do, isn't it?" Mercedes held her closer, kissing the tip of her nose.
"One of the greatest miracles of nature."

This is very sweet. There are often days when rain just sneaks up on you unexpected.
