Summary: Wei Wuxian reflects on his marriage.
So many people Wei Wuxian met on his travels told him that the novelty of being a married man would wear off quickly. That he would soon be over his marriage with Lan Wangji.
Well, they did until they recognised who he was and who he was married to. They were always quick to shut their mouths when Lan Wangji appeared, something that amused Wei Wuxian greatly.
It had been one year since their wedding and Wei Wuxian showed no signs of "getting over" his marriage with Lan Wangji and he was sure the feeling was mutual (everyday was everyday, after all). Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji balanced each other out nicely and there were many days Wei Wuxian couldn't believe this was his reality, his life. How had he been so fortunate to have Lan Wangji in such a way?
Whenever he expressed these thoughts to his husband, Lan Wangji was quick to either grab hold of Wei Wuxian's hand or tilt Wei Wuxian's chin up to meet his lips and remind him that he, too, was just as fortunate. And when Wei Wuxian looked into his husband's golden eyes, he could see the truth of that shining clearly; he could see the depth of Lan Wangji's love for him.
Sometimes he wondered how he ever thought Lan Wangji was a man of few expressions, because he had quickly learnt that was not the case. His husband was very expressive, you just had to know what to look for; such as a subtle quirk of an eyebrow, a slight widening of the eyes, a small tug at his lip, or even the reddening of his ears. Lan Wangji was not expressionless, by any means. But the fact that Wei Wuxian was one of the few who could decipher this made him feel special.
Wei Wuxian watched as his husband played their song on his guqin, his fingers effortlessly dancing over the strings. To think this man was his for life filled him with warmth. He couldn't help but smile.
Lan Wangji looked up from his instrument. "Wei Ying?"
"Yeah, Lan Zhan?" Wei Wuxian said.
"What's on your mind?"
Wei Ying hummed. "Just thinking about how unhappy so many people are in their marriages that they advise 'the novelty will wear off'. Lan Zhan, I don't think the novelty will wear off. Is there even a novelty? I will always be happy that I’m married to you. These feelings aren’t temporary."
A smile tugged at Lan Wangji's lips. "And I will always love Wei Ying."
Wei Wuxian grinned before jumping onto his husband’s lap, Lan Wangji’s words echoing in his head. A promise of forever with Lan Wangji was exactly what he wanted.
