[#124] Hops for a friend (Stardew Valley)
Theme Prompt: #124 - Best Friends Forever
Title: Hops for a friend
Fandom: Stardew Valley
Rating/Warnings: G, Slight spoilers for Andy's storyline in the Stardew Valley Expanded mod.
Bonus: No
Word Count: 500
Summary: Of all the friends that Anne has made in Pelican Town, she's closest to Andy.
"To farming," Anne said as the two of them sat at Anne's kitchen table. The Book of Yoba sat forgotten for the moment as he sipped at his beer and she sipped at her coffee. She hadn't thought she'd like Andy, given his Joja-loving ways and his initial gruffness, but he'd gotten used to her and she'd gotten used to him. "And foraging."
Andy was far more a faithful follower of Yoba than Anne was. He believed in hard work and not getting handouts, and had at first been jealous of her inheriting her grandfather's farm. But a certain camaraderie had grown between them, a bonding over forage and farming, dirt and rain, sprinklers and sun. Despite his misgivings, he'd given her strawberry seeds when she was first starting out; she'd reciprocated by buying him a beer out of her profits at the Saloon. It had cost her far more than she should have been spending, but she felt she owed him.
It was also why she never foraged in the woods, except to pick out the odd Spring Onion for a recipe. Why she limited herself to the area above her farm and around the lake, so she didn't deprive Andy of his livelihood. She sometimes quietly paid part of his bar tab as well, and Gus kept it a secret.
"To farming and foraging," Andy replied, clinking his beer mug with her coffee cup. "You've got a nice place here, Anne. You said you were thinking of marriage?"
"Yes, to Claire - the clerk over at Jojamart. We're still ironing out the details though - there's a lot to figure out." She took a sip of her coffee. Claire had wanted to keep her Jojamart job, and Anne could understand. No matter how profitable Anne's budding winery business was, Claire wanted to be more than a farmer's wife.
"She's a good sort." Andy took another sip of his beer. "You'll both figure it out. 'Sides, I know you, you're gonna treat her well. Looking forward to dancing at your wedding."
"Thanks, I really appreciate that, Andy. How's your crops doing? You willing to sell me hops again this year?" Trellis crops annoyed her, she had to admit. She grew one trellis plant a season, less if she could help it, so she only really had the one hops plant every year even though making Pale Ale with it was lucrative.
"Crops have been better," Andy told her. "But the forage keeps me afloat. That's all that matters. And sure - if you promise to give me your first bottle of Pale Ale this year."
"It's a deal," Anne replied. "Shake on it?"
As he reached across the table and shook her hand, she could not help but reflect that coming to Pelican Town, being a farmer, and making friends with one of her closest neighbors was the best thing ever.
