“You’re never going to guess what happened today,” Jiang Cheng’s best friend shouted into the phone.

Wei Wuxian sounded absolutely giddy. Jiang Cheng sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Tell me when you get here, you’re already late!”

“That’s part of what you won’t be able to guess,” Wei Wuxian insisted. “Lan Wangji asked to be my partner for this project.”

Jiang Cheng scoffed. Wei Wuxian was correct, he’d never have guessed that. “Did you tell him to fuck off?”

A moment of shocked silence, then Wei Wuxian said, “Jiang Cheng, I could never! Why would I? I’ve always admired Lan Zhan.”

“The guy you called a stuck-up, stone-faced, stick-in-the-mud statue?” Jiang Cheng asked. “Just to be clear, we’re talking about that Lan?”

“Opinions change,” Wei Wuxian said haughtily. “You should try being more open-minded, Jiang Cheng.”

“You’re the one who said that stuff, not me!” Jiang Cheng barked, “And besides, you already said you’d be my partner. So he’ll just have to wait until next time, right? We already went to the teacher with our topic, anyway.”

“About that,” Wei Wuxian said, clearing his throat. “The teacher doesn’t mind that we switched. And I’m sure you can find another topic, Jiang Cheng! There’s plenty of time.”

“Wei Wuxian,” Jiang Cheng shouted. “You dump me and steal my topic? You don’t even care about the ecological impact of lotuses on slow-moving waterways. That was my choice because you didn’t have any ideas!”

“Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian dragged the syllables of his name out in a long whine. “It’s Lan Zhan! I can’t say no to him.”

“So much for ‘best friends forever’,” Jiang Cheng disconnected the call and threw himself on the bed.

He screamed into a pillow. Wei Wuxian was so fucking inconsiderate. Who was he going to find to partner with him on such short notice? What was he going to do for a topic? He lay there debating the merits of just dropping out of this school all together and homeschooling himself. He ignored his phone the first two times but when whoever it was called for the third time he snatched up the phone.

“What?”

“Wow, you really are grumpy,” Nie Huaisang observed. “What did Wei Wuxian do this time?”

“What makes you think he did something?”

“He’s the only person who pisses you off this much.” Nie Huaisang’s words were punctuated by crunching noises. “And he just got done crying to me about how you’re mad at him and he’s a horrible person.”

Jiang Cheng rolled onto his back, staring up at the ceiling. “I am and he is.”

More crunching. “Uh-huh. So what did he do?”

“Dumped me for our group project in favor of Lan fucking Wangji and stole my fucking topic,” Jiang Cheng said. “That asshole had the gall to tell me he’s always respected that statue, like he hasn’t been tormenting the guy all god damn semester.”

Nie Huaisang hummed. “You know I think being an annoying little shit is Wei Wuxian’s love language. In which case, he loves Lan Wangji almost as much as he loves you.”

Jiang Cheng pulled the phone away from his head and stared at it in disbelief. Then threw it into his clothes hamper. He heaved himself off the bed and left his room, ignoring the distant sound of Huaisang shouting into the phone.

He went down to the kitchen and rummaged through the fridge. It was so stupid! He and Wei Wuxian had been working together in that class all semester. They’d been in and out of each other’s houses and pockets ever since Wei Wuxian’s parents bought a house two doors down from Jiang Cheng’s when they were both five.

And now. Just like that. So easily. Jiang Cheng had been tossed aside.

Well. It wasn’t like he hadn’t expected it. Everyone got tired of him eventually. It was an understood fact that all ‘their’ friends were really Wei Wuxian’s friends that just tolerated Jiang Cheng.

He pulled his sister’s latest batch of soup from the fridge and fixed himself a bowl to heat up in the microwave. A few mantou were left as well, he took one of those to eat while the soup warmed up.

“A-Cheng?” Jiang Yanli came into the kitchen and hopped up on the counter. “Are you okay?”

“Fine, Jiejie,” Jiang Cheng muttered, stuffing the rest of the mantou into his mouth.

She smiled and reached out to stroke his hair. “Now what have I told you about lying to Jiejie?”

“It isn’t a lie,” he protested around a full mouth. Hurriedly, he chewed and swallowed. “I am fine. I’m just annoyed.”

“What happened?”

Jiang Cheng glared furiously at the countertop. “That damn Wei Wuxian! He’s screwed me over again.”

“Now A-Cheng, is that a nice thing to say?”

“No, but it’s true.” Jiang Cheng sighed, pouting at his sister. “He’s doing the latest project with Lan Wangji and didn’t tell me until the last minute. And he took my project topic.”

“That isn’t very nice,” Jiang Yanli frowned. “Do you think I need to go put the fear of Jiejie into my baby brother’s best friend?”

“He’s not my best friend anymore,” Jiang Cheng grumbled. “He’s Lan Wangji’s best friend now. I’m just a sorry second choice, like always.”

Jiang Yanli hopped off the counter, her face set. “Well if that’s what he thinks, I have news for him! No one makes my A-Cheng feel second best.” She marched out of the kitchen.

Jiang Cheng caught up to her as she was putting her shoes on at the front door. “Jiejie, what are you doing? Stop!”

"Jiejie is just going to have a chat with that silly boy. Don’t worry.” She patted him on the head.

“Jiejie, please,” Jiang Cheng pleaded. “I don’t want to cause trouble.”

“Oh A-Cheng. This is what a good Jiejie does.”

Jiang Yanli slipped out the door, marching off down the sidewalk. Jiang Cheng could only follow, to witness the carnage.
