[#125] Belated Prediction
Theme Prompt: Come In From the Cold
Title: Belated Prediction
Fandom: Sailor Moon
Rating/Warnings: G
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 620
Summary: There were only a few flakes when she arrived at the shrine that morning. By the time she gets home, it's a wonder she hasn't been buried in it.
The tea is based on this.
The weather report was almost always wrong, or at least off. They were predicting heavy snow all day, but when Rei woke up the sky was clear. Only a few flakes had fallen on her way to the shrine, which seemed even stranger given how warm it felt for mid-February.
During the afternoon, visitors were shivering and shaking snow from their coats as they came in. A few people groaned at the prospect of having to "go home in that," and it wasn't until her grandfather told her to pack it in and get home for the day that Rei realized she wasn't walking into the unseasonable warmth and clear skies from that morning.
By the time she returned to her and Minako's cottage, the snow was up to mid-shin and Rei wished she'd taken Minako's advice and worn her heavier coat just in case. Those few flakes had multiplied, coating tree branches and road signs and mailboxes like powdered sugar.
It would be beautiful if she wasn't so cold. Rei shivered, fumbled in her coat pocket for her key, and jammed it into the lock. She'd barely given it a turn when the door swung open and there stood Minako, bundled up in a long wool skirt and sweater with a messy apron around her waist.
"You warned me," Rei muttered. Minako only smiled and helped her out of her soaked coat and boots, offering her a towel.
"Why don't you change into something warm and dry? It'll be ready in just a few minutes," she said.
"Dinner?" Rei didn't smell anything burning or hear Artemis yelling about the kitchen floor being covered in wet rice. Minako shook her head.
"I ordered takeout for later," she said. "You'll see what I mean soon. Now go change before you get sick!" She playfully nudged Rei towards the bedroom. Rei grabbed a towel on her way in and dried off as best she could before changing into her faded pink overalls and a black turtleneck sweater. When she came back into the den, there were two steaming cups on the coffee table. Probably hot chocolate, she thought, until the sharp scent hit her nose.
"Green tea?" No, this smelled sweeter, she could detect hints of cherry and apple and some ginger as well.
"It's a new blend," Minako said. "The studio closed today because of the snow so I did a few errands before it got really bad. I went into the shop and the salesman highly recommended it." She winked. "He didn't have to push that hard, though, I'd have bought it anyway. The smell reminded me of you." Rei smiled wryly.
"I smell like cherries and ginger?"
"No, not your body!" Minako giggled. "I mean it's sharp and sweet and just the littlest bit spicy like you." Rei tried not to laugh.
"Really." She sat down, taking one of the mugs and inhaling deeply. The smell warmed her all over, she could akmost taste it in the back of her throat. "I'll let that slide because this is just what I need after today."
"Good." Minako plopped down onto the couch next to her and leaned on her shoulder, grabbing her own cup. "So, besides the walk home, how were things at the shrine today?" Rei took a sip of the comforting blend and smiled, letting the warm flavors soak into her.
"Nothing out of the ordinary," she said, then added pointedly, "still worth going in for."
"Just remember to bundle up next time,"' Minako teased, and Rei would have bopped her with a pillow if she wasn't already feeling so relaxed.
"If I forget, at least I'll have you to come home to and keep me warm."
Snowflakes continued to fall outside, and they were much prettier now that they weren't landing on her face.

I LOVE how she's responding to what Minako doesn't say, a leftover from a previous conversation, and Minako sweetly just helps her get warm and have some tea <3
