[#126] Hide and Seek (Merlin)
Theme Prompt: Illusion
Title: Hide and Seek
Fandom: Merlin
Rating/Warnings: Teen, Suggestion of future sexual encounter, Poly
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 766
Summary: Gwen, Lancelot, and Arthur begin a silly game, but they have to keep it a secret from the rest of the castle.
Gwen races through the castle, her heels clacking against the stone floor. She tosses a look over her shoulder, even though she knows that Lancelot is still following her. He’s smiling as he rushes to keep up with her. When she turns back around, she runs smack into Arthur. With a breathless laugh, he scoops her into his arms. He presses in for a kiss. She pants into his mouth, giddy with adrenaline.
She feels Lancelot behind her, his lips pressed to her ear as he whispers, “Let’s hide again.”
She lets Lancelot grab her hand as he tugs her into a forgotten stone alcove, hidden in shadow. Arthur follows, standing in front of Gwen and crowding around them both as he leans over Gwen’s shoulder to press his mouth to Lancelot’s. Gwen laughs, the sound bubbling up from her chest unbidden. They are so beautiful like this, surrounding her. Lancelot’s hands reach around Gwen’s front to slide up her sides as Arthur kisses her neck. Arthur’s teeth graze her skin, and then he traces patterns on her cheek with his thumb. She sighs, pushing Lancelot’s hand lower as she gathers her skirts to keep them tucked behind the stone pillar and hidden. She pushes herself against Arthur’s thigh in the process, and she hears Arthur’s sharp intake of breath.
They pause like that, and she feels them both shiver against her. And then in a huff of exuberant laughter, Arthur takes off again down the hall.
Lucky for her, they never got too old to play tag.
It’s then that she hears someone else hurriedly walking up the hall, their steps echoing off the stone floor.
Sure, Arthur can be seen running through the castle. He’s the crown prince. But Gwen does not have that luxury.
She ducks back into the alcove, and holds her breath. Lancelot had already left their little hiding spot, and she risks a glance out of the shadows to see what he’s doing. Luckily, he’d noticed that someone was coming. He’s walking steadily and purposefully, as if he’s got somewhere to be.
She sighs and turns her face back into the shadows. Now they’re playing two games, one that captures childhood imagination, and the other a game of adult intrigue and illusion.
Her pulse pounds in her ears as she waits. The person passes her by without even slowing their step, and Gwen breathes easier after that. She waits a few moments more, carefully listening for anyone else.
When no one else comes, she smooths her dress and comes out from her hiding spot. The hall is completely empty. She walks slowly, the opposite of Lancelot’s brisk walk, on purpose. She doesn’t want it to look like she’s following anyone in particular.
The castle had already been talking about her and Lancelot. No reason to add fuel to the fire. She rounded the stone pillar, her eyes and ears scanning for any sign of the boys.
They’ve had quite a head start, and she’s going to have to outsmart them in order to find them. Which isn’t exactly out of the range of possibility, but it does present a nice challenge. She wonders what they might be getting up to in her absence. The thought itself is a delightful distraction.
She notices another maid walking down the hall towards her, and she quickly masks her expression. She nods at the maid in greeting, and then breathes a sigh of relief as soon as she passes.
It’s probably impossible at this point for the maid to guess where Gwen is going or what she’s up to, but Gwen still feels the thrill of deception run up her spine. Gwen may not be the best actress, but a small amount of palace intrigue is actually suiting her just fine.
And then she’s struck by an idea. Arthur would know to keep this discreet. After all, he’d been able to make it through his teen years with hardly a dirty story passing around the castle. He would also want to win the games they’re playing.
It’s obvious to her now. He probably went back to his room, a place he’d assume would be written off as too obvious. It also happened to be the most private place in the castle.
Gwen carefully does not quicken her pace, in case she comes upon someone else. It doesn’t take her long to get to Arthur’s chambers, though.
When she slips through the wooden door and shuts it again, she is greeted by Lancelot and Arthur, beckoning her forward.
She smiles. Today, they are all victors.
