Summary: Remy comes home to a surprise.

Remy was tired. He'd had to go down to Louisiana again to deal with more Thieves Guild business, and he had insisted on taking his own bike rather than any plane owned by the X-Men or having any of their teleporters take him down. The trip there and back had been lovely with plenty of quiet roads stretched out before him, but he had gotten back just in time to have to go off to save the world, then the universe, and then the world again. To make matters worse, his wife had been gone on some kind of super secret mission of which she had not even bothered to share the details with him before leaving.

And oh, how his mind loved to play tricks on him! He was quite certain it wasn't easy for Rogue either with the way Belladonna kept creeping up and causing problems for them, but with no idea of where his chere had gone, his mind had played torturous tricks on him all throughout the last three crucial missions. He knew for years that she had thought that the old Magnethead had better things to offer her than he did, and with no idea where Lehnsherr was either, Remy had imagined the two of them sneaking off to the Savage Land for too many times.

Yet the moment he'd arrived tonight he had felt Jean's gentle touch in his mind assuring him, I told you to trust her, Remy. Rogue's in the kitchen, waiting for you. She's made everybody else have to go get dinner out tonight. Even paid for Bobby's! But she would not let anybody in the kitchen!

What on Earth? he wondered as he crept into the kitchen. Candlelight flickered on the long table, but the smell of smoke was heavy in the air. He knew with one sniff that candles were not the only things that had burned tonight. When Rogue turned to face him in her shortest shorts and his favorite tank top, he grinned. Candles definitely weren't the only things smoking hot tonight!

But he knew his chere. He instantly spotted the telltale streaks on her face where her tears had poured earlier that evening. He knew from the ways in which her beautiful hair stuck out that she had been having it rough as well, and he was willing to bet (and was almost right when he gambled) that her exhaustion did not just stem from whatever her mission had been. He no longer cared about the details of that mission as he watched her face light up with joy before fear and uncertainty passed over it. What she had been doing over the last coupled days didn't matter. What either of them had been doing did not matter. All that mattered was that they were together again.

Spying the large pot that he knew instinctively was bubbling with gumbo behind her and the big, cinnamon cake that was a tad too dark held in her hands, Remy grinned broadly. "Smells like home." He smirked and winked at her, but to his surprise, she started again to cry!

She threw the cake down onto the table, clearly disgusted. "Ah tried, Remy!" She shook her head forlornly. "Ah swear Ah tried!"

He nearly jumped to her. Taking her into his arms, he crooned, "What's wrong, chere? Remy'll make it better." Whatever was bothering her, he would fix it, just as he had always striven to do since he had first met this wonderful woman! He kissed her forehead, then stroked her hair with both hands. "Just tell me," he whispered against her lips, "an' I'll make it wonderful it is better!"

But she turned from him, stomping her foot instead. "It's this darn food! Ah thought it couldn't be too hard to cook Cajun! Ah mean, Ah'm used to cookin' Southern, but -- but -- " She shook her head. "Ah don't know! Maybe Ah've been savin' th' world too much! Ah've burned everythin' all night long!"

Remy's red eyes quickly swept the kitchen, and spotted two full trash cans. One had another cake that was black sticking out of its top, and the other was filled with... what he could only assume had been shrimp and crawfish once upon a time. "Aw, chere, I knew it smelled like home!" He drew her back into his arms. He kissed the side of her head, then her cheek, and then her neck. Squeezing her gently, he refused to release her again. "Don' dink you're de only one, mon coeur, who's burned jambalaya and étouffée before! Why, even ol' Remy's done it before!"

Rogue sniffled. It was startling to see her this way, yet also strangely heart-warming. She so often seemed fully certain of herself.
Yet she was falling to pieces over trying, and failing, to make him dinner! He was going to eat that gumbo and that stupid King's cake wannabe, Remy determined, and act like it was the best food he'd ever had! But first, he had to cheer up his wife! He hated seeing her so sad!

"R-Really?" Rogue asked, her voice trembling.

"O' course! What? You thought Remy was born knowin' how to cook? I had to learn in de Thieves Guild, chere, an' believe me you, I got my butt kicked many a night for makin' what dey thought was inedible!"

"Well, Ah -- " She sniffled again. "Ah'm not sure it's completely inedible -- "

"I bet it's not. Darn smells good to me!" He turned in his arms, lifted her chin, and gazed into her eyes. "But it's gonna be de best meal ever, chere, 'cause you made it." He kissed her forehead, then her nose. "An' it does smell like home. It is home not because o' any ol' food, but because I'm back with you where dis ol' Cajun belongs." He kissed her lips long and full, then proceeded to sample the food, rave over it, and secretly add more seasoning!
